It also sits flat and secure, which cuts rattles and stops the box sliding around under braking. Choosing the right 12 inch subwoofer

• Power handling. Match the RMS rating of the driver to the RMS output of your amplifier. Peak figures are marketing numbers, RMS is what matters.
• Impedance. Dual voice coil drivers such as the Alpine can be wired to 1 or 4 ohms, giving more flexibility with amplifier choice. Single coil drivers are simpler to wire.

Getting the best sound

Set the amplifier low-pass filter around 80 Hz, keep the subsonic filter on for ported boxes, and set the gain with the head unit at three quarters volume so the sub never clips. Face a ported enclosure towards the tailgate rather than into a side panel, and secure the box with straps or brackets. If the bass sounds thin, reverse the polarity on the sub and listen again, as a phase mismatch with the door speakers can cancel low frequencies.
