How to choose a car amplifier in 2026

A car amplifier is the single biggest upgrade you can make to a factory audio system. It cleans up the signal, delivers proper power to your speakers and subwoofers, and stops the distortion you get when you turn the head unit volume above two-thirds. The 2026 market splits into four clear categories, and the right choice depends on what you are powering and how much boot space you can give up.

Mono, 2 channel, 4 channel or 5 channel: which class fits your build

• Mono blocks. Built for one job, driving a subwoofer hard. Class D efficiency, low impedance stability, big power on a small chassis.
• 2 channel. Ideal for a front pair of components or as a bridged sub amp. The classic Class A/B sound for door speakers.
• 4 channel. The most flexible option. Run a full front and rear stage, or three channels to speakers and one bridged to a sub.
• 5 channel. One amplifier that handles four speakers and a subwoofer. The cleanest install with the least wiring.

Power ratings: RMS vs peak

Always match speakers and subs to the RMS rating of the amplifier, never the peak. Peak figures are short term and useful only for headroom marketing. A 500W RMS mono block driving a 500W RMS subwoofer at 1 ohm is a clean, lasting pairing. Pushing 1,500W of marketed peak power into the same sub is how voice coils burn out.

Class A/B vs Class D efficiency

Class A/B amplifiers still set the standard for full range warmth on door speakers and components. Class D amplifiers are now mature enough to drive mids and highs as cleanly as Class A/B, while running far cooler and pulling less current. For subwoofer duty Class D has been the default for over a decade and is the only sensible choice.

Wiring kits and accessories you will need

An amplifier is only as good as its install. Plan the wiring kit alongside the amp, not afterwards. Under 300W RMS total system power, an 8 gauge kit is fine. Between 300W and 800W, step up to 4 gauge. Above 800W, fit 0 gauge OFC cable from the battery, with a matched fuse holder within 30cm of the positive terminal.

Compatibility and fitting

• Amp wiring kit. Power, ground, remote turn-on lead, RCAs and a fuse holder, sized to your power draw.
• Distribution block. Required if you run two amplifiers from a single 0 gauge feed.
• Hi-Lo level converter. Needed when retaining a factory head unit without RCA pre-outs.
• Ground point. A bare metal chassis bolt within 45cm of the amp, scraped back to clean steel.
• Speaker cable. Use OFC 14 gauge for door speakers, OFC 12 gauge for subwoofers.
