How to choose a car stereo cage in 2026
A stereo cage, sometimes called a mounting sleeve or a DIN cage, is the thin metal frame that holds a single DIN head unit in your dashboard. It is a small part, typically between £9.49 and £17.90, but without the right one your new stereo has nothing to grip and will work loose within weeks. Cages are usually brand specific, so the model number is what matters.
What a stereo cage actually does
The cage slides into the dashboard aperture. You then bend out its tabs against the surrounding trim so it locks in place, and the head unit clips into the cage. This is why the cage has to match the stereo brand: Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, Alpine, JVC, Clarion and Blaupunkt all use slightly different clip geometry, and a mismatched cage either will not latch or will let the unit rattle.
Brand specific cages and why they differ
Three things vary between manufacturers:
- Clip position. The height and depth of the retaining lugs differ, which is why a Kenwood CT26KW01 will not hold a Sony unit.
- Sleeve depth. Alpine and Clarion sleeves tend to run slightly longer, which matters in shallow dashboards.
- Tab pattern. The number and spacing of the bendable tabs changes how securely the cage grips different dash materials.
When a universal cage is the right answer
The CT24UV05 universal kit is the sensible choice when you are replacing a very old aftermarket install, when the original cage has been damaged or discarded, or when you are fitting into a custom panel. It ships with removal keys and trim, so it covers the whole job in one purchase. For a straight brand to brand swap, though, the matched cage always gives a tighter and quieter fit.
Removal keys and trim rings
Removal keys are the U shaped or pin shaped tools that release a head unit from its cage. They are cheap, they are brand specific, and they are the single most commonly lost car audio accessory. Buy a spare pair with the cage. Trim rings cover the gap between the cage and the dashboard, and a missing trim ring is what makes an otherwise tidy install look like an afterthought.
Fitting a cage without damaging the dashboard
Work slowly. Remove the surrounding trim with plastic pry tools rather than a screwdriver, slide the cage in until it is flush, then bend only the tabs that make firm contact with solid dashboard structure. Bending every tab is a common mistake and it distorts the sleeve, which makes the head unit hard to remove later. Test fit the stereo before you refit the trim panels.
Brand quality at a glance
- Connects2. The core range here, with matched CT26 cages for Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, Alpine, JVC, Clarion and Blaupunkt.
- Universal kits. The CT24UV05 combines a metal cage, removal keys and trim in one part for non standard installations.
- Multi variant options. Kenwood alone is covered by the CT26KW01, CT26KW02 and CT26KW03, so check your exact head unit series before ordering.
Compatibility and fitting
A cage is only one piece of a head unit installation. A complete swap normally also needs:
- Fascia adapter panel. This fills the gap around the new unit so it sits flush with your dashboard and looks factory fitted.
- ISO wiring harness. A vehicle specific loom that plugs into your existing connector, so no factory wiring is cut.
- Steering wheel control adapter. Retains your volume, track and phone buttons on the wheel rather than losing them.
- Aerial adapter. Converts your car aerial plug to the standard DIN or Fakra fitting the new unit expects, and supplies phantom power where needed.
