Info adapter buying guide for 2026
Modern UK cars route audio, comfort and diagnostic data through CAN Bus and MOST networks, so a head unit swap without the right info adapter risks losing factory parking sensors, climate display and seat belt warning chimes. This 2026 guide explains what an info adapter does, which interface fits which manufacturer, and the supporting fitting parts you should buy at the same time.
What an info adapter actually does
An info adapter sits between your factory wiring loom and your aftermarket head unit. It translates manufacturer-specific data into standard 12V signals, then sends ignition wake-up, illumination and reverse triggers back to your new stereo. Many units also feed steering wheel control commands into the head unit using a single grey signal wire.
Which brands work in which cars
- Connects2 CTSXX series. BMW, Mini, Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen group cars from 2007 onward.
- Connects2 CTKxx kits. Ford, Vauxhall and Renault retention with simple plug-and-play wiring.
- PAC OS series. American-market models and select European GM, Chrysler and Ford fitments.
- Autoleads PC9 looms. Budget data retention for older 2000 to 2014 fitments.
- Metra AXxess. Toyota, Honda and Subaru CAN-Bus retention with chime and warning fixes.
Premium audio systems
BMW HiFi, Audi Symphony, Mercedes Audio 20 and Land Rover Meridian all route audio through an amplifier rather than the head unit. The right info adapter passes a low-level pre-amp signal back into the factory amp so your speakers keep their factory equalisation after the swap. Look for adapters labelled amplified, active or premium.
If your car has the Bang and Olufsen, Bose, Harman Kardon or Meridian badge, always confirm the exact pre-out wiring before ordering. Some premium systems use a digital optical feed that needs an additional MOST or fibre converter rather than the standard analogue interface, and getting the wrong one means the speakers stay silent until the right loom arrives.
Steering wheel control retention
- Pioneer. Use a Pioneer-pattern interface or the universal SWC port on newer head units.
- Kenwood. Set the head unit to remote learn mode and assign each wheel button.
- Sony. Pairs cleanly with Connects2 CTSXX adapters.
- Alpine. Use the Alpine APF series or the universal grey signal input.
- JVC. Set the J-Link remote input to suit the chosen interface.
Brand quality at a glance
- Connects2. Strongest all-round CAN Bus catalogue with regular firmware updates.
- PAC. Excellent for premium amp retention and OEM line-out converters.
- Autoleads. Reliable budget option for everyday hatchback and saloon installs.
- Axxess Metra. Great for less common Asian-market fitments.
- AAMP Global. Solid choice for diagnostic OBD-friendly interfaces.
Compatibility and fitting
An info adapter is almost always installed at the same time as a head unit swap. The full part list typically includes:
- Fascia adapter. Holds the new stereo cleanly in the dash.
- ISO harness. Combines with the info adapter to map factory speaker pinouts.
- Steering wheel control adapter. Often built into the same interface to save wiring.
- Aerial adapter. Translates Fakra, DIN or Phantom feed to suit your stereo.
- Microphone extension. Lets you mount the Bluetooth mic by the headliner.
Updating firmware
Connects2, PAC and Metra all publish firmware updates that fix newer vehicle quirks such as iDrive 7 timeout, MMI gateway changes and Sync 4 retention. Always check for the latest update file before fitting, especially on cars from 2020 onward where manufacturers continue to revise the CAN messages.
