Tune sub output on the move with bass controllers, the remote dial that mounts under the dash and adjusts subwoofer level on a class-D mono amplifier without ducking under the boot. Most knobs use the included six metre RJ-style cable for plug and play wiring straight to the amplifier port, with marked notches from minimum to maximum gain. We stock controllers from JL Audio, Vibe, Pioneer, Phoenix Gold and Hertz to match popular chassis. Bass Junkies dispatches every bass remote quickly across the UK.

How to choose a car amp bass controller in 2026
A bass controller is the small dashboard knob that lets you raise or lower subwoofer output without taking your eyes off the road. It is the single best ten-pound upgrade on any sub install, giving you tighter control over the system in different music styles, different cars and different speeds. The 2026 range covers everything from basic potentiometer knobs to fully digital remotes with display screens. This guide explains the categories and how to choose.
What a bass controller actually does
A car amp bass controller plugs into the dedicated remote input on the amplifier and electrically adjusts the subwoofer gain from the dashboard. It does not affect the head unit signal, so you keep all of your tuning settings intact. The two most common types are passive analogue knobs and active digital remotes with their own DSP.
Passive analogue knobs
The classic bass controller is a single potentiometer in a small dial. Cheap, reliable, plug and play with most modern amps. Look for:
- Quality detent feel. The knob should turn smoothly without crackle or wobble.
- Long cable run. Five to seven metres is standard, enough for boot or under-seat amplifier locations.
- RJ-style connector. Most manufacturers use the same plug, but always check before you order.
Active digital remotes
Higher-end amplifiers come with digital remote controllers that show a small LCD or LED level meter. These talk to the amplifier DSP over a serial link and often add features like input selection, preset recall and crossover control. The Audison bit One DRC, Match DSP UP10DSP and JL Audio HD-RLC are well-known examples.
Universal versus brand-specific
A universal bass controller works with most amplifiers that have a 3.5 mm or RJ-style remote input. Brand-specific controllers (Pioneer GM-D series, Kenwood KAC-X series, Rockford Punch Level Control) plug directly into a matching amplifier port and may unlock display features that a universal cannot. Always check your amplifier model before you order.
Where to mount the controller
The best mounting spots in a UK car are:
- Lower dash centre console. Easy reach for driver and passenger, hidden when not in use.
- Driver door pocket lip. Quick adjustment while driving without looking down.
- Underside of the dash. Discreet, popular for show cars and clean installs.
- Centre armrest. Hidden but convenient if the cable run allows.
Compatibility check
Most aftermarket amplifiers from 2015 onwards include a bass controller socket on the input panel. Older amplifiers may need a passive line driver added between the head unit subwoofer pre-out and the amplifier input. We stock both styles and the team can advise.
Brand quality at a glance
- Pioneer. GM-D and PRS series, clean knob feel and reliable wiring.
- Kenwood. KCA-RC series, plug and play with all current Kenwood amps.
- Rockford Fosgate. Punch Level Control 1, classic black knob, tactile feel.
- JL Audio. HD-RLC, premium build and dead silent operation.
- Audison. bit One DRC, full digital control for DSP-equipped Audison amps.
- Vibe. Affordable knobs that pair with Vibe and most other amplifiers.
Compatibility and fitting
A bass controller install is usually under 30 minutes with the right accessories:
- Extension cable. Required if the supplied lead does not reach from boot to dash.
- Cable clips. Run the lead under door sills and trim panels for a hidden install.
- Mounting bracket. Universal knobs include a metal bracket, vehicle-specific brackets available for VW, Audi and BMW.
- Drill template. Some controllers require a 10 mm hole through trim, use a step bit and sand the edge.
