DAB car stereos buying guide for 2026
Digital radio coverage across the UK now reaches the overwhelming majority of the population, and the station choice simply does not exist on FM. Fitting a DAB car stereo is the most cost effective single upgrade most drivers can make, adding dozens of national and local stations, station names and track information on screen, and in almost every case Bluetooth hands free calling and audio streaming alongside it.
What DAB gives you over FM
Beyond the extra stations, digital broadcast removes the hiss and drift that plagues FM on long journeys. Signal is either present or it is not, so there is no gradual decline into static. Most modern units also support DAB+, the more efficient codec now used by many newer UK stations, and include service following, which hands you between transmitters automatically as you travel.
Key features to compare
- DAB+ support. Essential in 2026, since a growing number of stations broadcast only in the newer format.
- Mechless or CD. Mechless units drop the disc drive for a slimmer chassis and lower price. Choose CD only if you still play discs regularly.
- Bluetooth profiles. Look for hands free calling and A2DP streaming, and check whether two phones can pair at once.
- Pre out channels. Two or three pairs of pre outs let you add amplifiers and a subwoofer later without replacing the head unit.
- Voice assistant support. Some units integrate Alexa or allow direct access to Siri and Google Assistant through the microphone.
- Display type. Consider legibility in daylight and whether the colour can be matched to your dashboard lighting.
Brand quality at a glance
- Pioneer. Strong all round value with excellent Spotify and smartphone integration across the MVH and FH ranges.
- Alpine. Clean audio engineering and robust build, with the UTE series a long standing favourite for mechless installs.
- Kenwood. Feature rich units, often first to market with voice assistant support and dual phone pairing.
- Sony. Well judged sound tuning and clear displays at competitive prices.
- JVC. Dependable everyday units with straightforward menus.
- Caliber. Retro styled DAB units for classic and characterful vehicles where a modern face would look wrong.
The aerial is not optional
This is where most disappointing DAB installs go wrong. A DAB signal will not travel down a standard FM antenna at usable strength. You need either a dedicated DAB glass mount or roof mount aerial, or a splitter that feeds the existing amplified antenna into the DAB tuner. Budget for the aerial at the same time as the head unit, because a good stereo with the wrong aerial will drop out constantly and feel like a downgrade.
Compatibility and fitting
- Fascia adapter. Fills the aperture around a single or double DIN unit so the dashboard looks factory finished.
- ISO harness. Connects the stereo to your vehicle loom with no cutting, and supplies the correct ignition and permanent live feeds.
- Steering wheel control adapter. Retains volume, track and phone buttons on the wheel, which is a safety benefit as well as a convenience.
- Aerial adapter. Converts the factory plug to DIN or Fakra and passes phantom power to amplified antennas.
Single DIN or double DIN
Check the aperture in your dashboard before ordering. Single DIN openings measure roughly 180mm by 50mm and double DIN roughly 180mm by 100mm. Many vehicles with a double DIN opening can accept a single DIN unit with a pocket, and some with a single DIN slot can be opened up using a model specific fascia. If you are unsure, send us your registration and we will confirm which size and fascia kit your car takes.
