Choosing a 6.5 inch car subwoofer in 2026

Compact subwoofers have improved enormously, and a modern 6.5 inch driver in a properly designed cabinet now does what an underperforming 10 inch did a decade ago. This size is the answer for city cars, company cars, leased vehicles and anyone who needs the boot to stay a boot. It is also the natural choice for under seat installs where total depth is measured in centimetres.

Shallow mount and under seat designs

Shallow mount subwoofers use a redesigned motor and a flatter cone profile so the whole driver fits in a fraction of the usual depth. Kicker CompRT is the best known example, delivering around 300 watts RMS from a chassis slim enough to sit under a front seat or behind a side panel. The trade off is a slightly higher tuning point, which in practice means punchier bass rather than the very deepest notes.

Vented and plug and play enclosures

• Set the low pass filter around 80Hz. This blends the sub with the door speakers so you hear one system rather than two.
• Engage the subsonic filter on vented boxes. Filtering below roughly 30Hz protects the cone from uncontrolled excursion at high volume.

Getting the most from a compact sub

Placement changes the result more than any setting. Firing the cone towards the rear of the car or into a boundary such as a seat base or panel gains useful output for free. Keep the power cable short and correctly fused, run RCA leads down the opposite side of the car from the power to avoid alternator whine, and set the gain by ear with the bass boost at zero.
