Number plate camera kit buying guide for 2026
Number plate camera kits are the cleanest reverse camera upgrade available in 2026. The camera lives in the plate surround, so the rear of the car still looks OEM, the lens is protected and most kits work with your existing head unit. This guide explains sensor choice, image modes, fitting wiring and the parts you need to complete the job.
How a number plate camera kit works
A short composite or AHD video lead runs from the camera, hidden in the plate surround, into the boot or load area. From there it joins the reverse trigger wire to power on automatically when you select reverse gear, then feeds the rear-view image to a head unit, mirror monitor or factory screen.
CMOS vs CCD sensors
- CMOS cameras. Lower power draw, sharper colours in daylight, lower price.
- CCD cameras. Better low-light performance and cleaner night image for vans and motorhomes.
- AHD high-definition. Pair with a compatible head unit for crisp 720p or 1080p reversing.
- Standard NTSC composite. Plug-and-play with the widest range of UK aftermarket stereos.
- Mirror flip mode. Inverts the image so reverse guidance lines match driver perspective.
Lens angle and parking lines
Most modern plate kits offer a 140 to 170 degree field of view, which is wide enough to see kerbs and pedestrians without too much fish-eye distortion. Look for adjustable parking guidance lines that you can switch off if your head unit draws its own dynamic overlays.
If you tow a caravan or trailer regularly, choose a kit with a tilt-adjustable lens so you can angle the camera down once the hitch is loaded. Trade-only installers can also fit a second auxiliary lens above the brake light for full ground coverage right behind the bumper.
Brand quality at a glance
- Connects2. Best all-round UK fitment patterns, with mounts for vans and saloons.
- ACV. Strong AHD options for high-resolution stereo screens.
- Pioneer. Reference kits tuned for Pioneer head units.
- Autoleads. Budget-friendly CMOS kits suited to first-time installs.
- Kenwood. Branded reverse cameras designed around Kenwood DDX and DMX screens.
Compatibility and fitting
A number plate camera kit is rarely a stand-alone job. Most installs need:
- Fascia adapter. If you are also upgrading the head unit at the same time.
- ISO harness. Tidies factory power and speaker wiring.
- Steering wheel control adapter. Keeps cruise and audio buttons working post-install.
- Aerial adapter. If swapping the head unit, converts factory aerial to DIN or DAB.
- Reverse trigger lead. Picks up reverse switch power to wake the camera.
Vans, motorhomes and large vehicles
On a long-wheelbase Transit, Sprinter or motorhome, a single rear camera is often not enough. Consider a second side or blind-spot camera linked through a video switcher or multi-channel monitor. AHD CCD sensors are worth the extra cost for night-time loading bay manoeuvres.
Wiring tips
Run the camera lead inside the rubber boot conduit and pop it through the body grommet to keep the loom dry and tidy. Keep the camera power feed away from ignition coils and dash cam looms to avoid interference lines on the picture. Earth to a clean bolt on the body, not a paint-coated panel.
Twist any spare video lead into a tight coil and tape it inside the tailgate trim rather than leaving it loose, which prevents the cable rubbing against sharp metal edges. If your kit comes with a 6 metre lead but you only need 3 metres, never cut a composite video cable, it will introduce ghosting and reflections. Bundle the slack neatly under the boot trim instead.
