The complete guide to trickle charger cables and connectors in 2026
A trickle charger is only as good as the connection between it and the battery, and that is where the X-Connect system earns its keep. Rather than clamping crocodile clips onto terminals every time, you fit a fused eyelet lead once and simply plug in. This guide explains which cable does what, how the fusing protects your vehicle and which parts suit stored cars, motorhomes and workshop use.
Why the connection matters more than the charger
Poor contact at the battery is the most common cause of a charger appearing to underperform. Corroded clamps, thin cable and loose terminals all add resistance, which drops voltage before it ever reaches the cells. A permanently bolted eyelet lead with a decent conductor removes that variable entirely and keeps the charging current stable through the whole cycle.
Eyelet terminals versus plug adapters
Eyelet terminals bolt directly to the battery posts and are the right choice for anything stored long term, because you can route the plug somewhere accessible and leave it. Plug adapters connect through a 12V socket instead, which is quicker but only works if that socket stays live with the ignition off. For classics, motorbikes and seasonal vehicles, choose eyelets every time.
- M6 eyelet terminal. The GC002 fused lead suits most car and motorcycle battery posts.
- M10 eyelet terminal. The GC008 fits larger commercial, marine and leisure battery hardware.
- 12V male plug. The GC003 charges through a cigarette lighter socket with a fused LED indicator.
- Socket with eyelets. The GC018 adds a permanent fused 12V outlet wired straight to the battery.
Extension cables and reaching awkward batteries
Modern batteries are often hidden under boot floors, beneath seats or behind trim panels. A 10ft X-Connect extension such as the GC004, or the 3m heavy duty GPA001 for the GENIUSPRO25, lets the charger sit safely on a bench while the lead reaches the terminals. The 12ft GC019 cigarette lighter extension does the same job for socket based charging in motorhomes and vans.
Fusing and electrical safety
Every X-Connect lead in this range carries an inline fuse, typically rated at 20 amps. That fuse is there to protect the vehicle wiring rather than the charger, so never bypass it or fit a higher value. Check the fuse first if a previously working lead suddenly does nothing, as it is a far more likely culprit than the charger itself.
Brand quality at a glance
- NOCO GC series. Core X-Connect terminals, plugs and extensions for GENIUS battery chargers.
- NOCO GBC series. Boost jump starter accessories including the 65W USB-C vehicle charger.
- NOCO GPA series. Heavy duty leads designed for the professional GENIUSPRO range.

Compatibility and fitting
Fitting takes minutes with basic tools, but a few related parts are worth considering at the same time if you are wiring a vehicle for long term storage.
- Fascia adapter. Tidies any new charging socket into an existing dashboard or panel aperture.
- ISO harness. Lets you tap a switched or permanent feed without cutting the factory loom.
- Steering wheel control adapter. Retains original controls when a charging install runs alongside a stereo upgrade.
- Aerial adapter. Keeps radio reception intact where cabling shares a route behind the dash.
Care, routing and getting the best life
Route leads away from hot exhaust components and moving steering or suspension parts, and secure them with cable ties every 30cm or so. Cap the X-Connect plug when not in use to keep moisture out, and give the eyelets a wipe of petroleum jelly to stop corrosion at the terminal. Looked after, these leads will outlast several chargers.
