Bluetooth interface adaptor buying guide for 2026
Many cars built between 2004 and 2015 have an excellent factory stereo with an integrated screen, steering wheel controls and an amplified system, but no Bluetooth. Replacing that stereo means losing the OEM look and often the vehicle settings menu. A Bluetooth interface adaptor solves the problem properly: it plugs into the factory CD changer, AMI or AUX connection behind the dash and adds wireless streaming and hands free calling while everything else stays exactly as the manufacturer intended.
How these adaptors actually work
The adaptor emulates a device the factory head unit already understands, most commonly a CD changer or an external media input. Audio then arrives through the original amplifier and speakers rather than a poor quality FM transmitter. Because the interface sits on the vehicle bus, track selection and call answering can usually be driven from the existing steering wheel buttons. There is no cutting, no visible box on the dashboard and no loss of factory features.
Vehicle specific or universal
- Vehicle specific kits. Connects2 CTA series adaptors are built for one platform, such as Audi AMI, Alfa Romeo or Mazda 2006 to 2009, and plug straight in with no configuration.
- Universal line level interfaces. JL Audio MBT-RX and MBT-CRX add a high quality Bluetooth receiver to any amplifier or head unit with an RCA input.
- Marine and powersports versions. The JL Audio CRX variant is designed for open cabin use where moisture resistance matters.
- Intelligent interfaces. The Kicker 42IQI adds Bluetooth control and app based tuning to compatible amplified systems.
What you gain and what stays the same
You gain A2DP music streaming from any phone, hands free calling with a microphone included in most kits, and in many cases track and artist information on the factory display. What stays the same is arguably more important: the original screen, the factory equaliser, the vehicle settings menus, parking sensor chimes and the manufacturer amplifier. On premium systems from Bose, Harman Kardon or Bang and Olufsen, keeping the original processing is a genuine sound quality advantage.
Brand quality at a glance
- Connects2. The most comprehensive UK range of vehicle specific streaming and hands free interfaces, with regular firmware updates.
- JL Audio. Premium universal Bluetooth receivers with clean line level output for amplifier and marine installs.
- Kicker. Intelligent interfaces that combine Bluetooth input with app control over connected amplification.
- Autoleads and PAC. Supporting harnesses, patch leads and vehicle specific looms that complete the installation.
Checking compatibility before you order
Fitment depends on the exact head unit variant, not just the car model and year. An Audi A5 with Concert, Symphony or MMI will each need a different part. Before ordering, note the make, model, year and the name printed on the factory stereo, and check whether the car already has a CD changer fitted, because the adaptor usually occupies that connection. Photographing the rear of the head unit connector is the fastest way for us to confirm.
Compatibility and fitting
- Fascia adapter. Not required for most interface installs, since the factory stereo stays in place, but needed if you later change the head unit.
- ISO harness. Some interfaces require an ISO patch lead between the adaptor and the vehicle plug, supplied with the kit or sold separately.
- Steering wheel control adapter. Usually unnecessary because factory buttons continue to work, though needed on a full head unit replacement.
- Aerial adapter. Only relevant if the install also involves changing the head unit, in which case the vehicle aerial plug must be converted.
Installation notes
Most kits are a genuine plug and play job once the head unit is out of the dash, and the main effort is removing trim without marking it. Use plastic trim tools rather than screwdrivers. Route the microphone lead up the A pillar to the headlining for the clearest call quality, and secure the interface module with cable ties so it cannot rattle behind the dashboard. Pair the phone before refitting the trim so any issues are caught early.
Why buy from Bass Junkies
Bass Junkies has been supplying and fitting car audio since 1995, and our Wolverhampton workshop has fitted these interfaces to hundreds of Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Vauxhall, Ford and Mazda vehicles, so we know which part number works on which head unit variant. That experience matters more here than on any other product category, because ordering the wrong variant wastes a dashboard strip down. Send us your registration and a photo of the factory stereo, or call the team on 01902 863 005, and we will confirm the correct interface before you buy.
