How to choose an app radio car stereo screen in 2026
An app radio is a touchscreen head unit built around your phone rather than around a CD mechanism. It puts navigation, music, messages and calls on a dashboard sized display and runs them through your car speakers. The choice comes down to four things: the screen size your dashboard can physically take, whether you want wireless or wired smartphone mirroring, how much DAB and radio performance matters to you, and how far you plan to take the rest of the system later on.
What an app radio actually gives you
Every unit here is mechless, meaning there is no CD slot and the whole front panel is screen. That frees internal space for better processing and cooling. You get Apple CarPlay or Android Auto projection, Bluetooth hands free calling, USB playback and usually DAB radio. The screen also becomes your reversing camera display, which is the single most useful upgrade on a van or an older estate.
Screen size and dashboard fitment
Sizes run from 6.2 inches up to 9 inches, and bigger is not automatically better. A 6.2 or 6.8 inch unit drops into a standard double DIN aperture on most cars from 2005 onwards. Anything larger needs a floating screen design or a vehicle specific mount, such as the 9 inch Alpine style system built for the Mercedes Vito 447. Measure the aperture first.
Wireless versus wired projection
Wireless CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are the 2026 standard on units such as the Pioneer SPH-DA77DAB and the JVC KW-M785DBW. You pair once and the phone connects automatically on each start. The trade off is that wireless projection drains a phone battery faster than it charges over a standard USB port, so run a decent quality cable from the unit to a charging point if you drive long distances. Wired units like the Pioneer SPH-DA160DAB are cheaper and rock solid.
DAB and radio performance in the UK
Prioritise DAB+ rather than plain DAB. UK broadcasters moved a large share of national and regional stations onto DAB+ through 2024 and 2025, and a plain DAB tuner simply will not receive them. Every DAB unit here needs an active DAB aerial, which is usually a windscreen film or glass mount type. That aerial is not optional, and reception complaints are almost always an aerial problem rather than a head unit problem.
Sound quality and system expansion
If you plan to add amplifiers later, check the preout count and voltage. Two pairs of preouts at 2 volts is entry level. Three pairs at 4 volts, as found on the Pioneer SPH-EVO82DAB-UNI and the Alpine units, gives you a cleaner signal, less noise over long cable runs and proper front, rear and subwoofer separation. Time alignment and a 13 band graphic equaliser make a bigger difference to perceived quality than raw wattage does.
Brand quality at a glance
- Pioneer. Deep model range, the strongest DAB tuners in the class and reliable wired CarPlay from the SPH-DA series upwards.
- Alpine. Vehicle specific systems and premium sound processing, including built in iGo Primo navigation on the INE series.
- Kenwood. Excellent value on larger screens, with the DMX and DNX ranges offering navigation and DAB+ together.
- JVC. Wireless projection at a competitive price, sharing much of Kenwood's underlying platform.
- Sony. The XAV-AX range is a favourite for reliable, fuss free CarPlay in a compact 6.4 inch chassis.
Compatibility and fitting
Fitting an aftermarket unit into a modern car is rarely a straight swap. In most vehicles you will also need:
- Fascia adapter panel. This fills the gap around the new unit so it sits flush with your dashboard and looks factory fitted.
- ISO wiring harness. A vehicle specific loom that plugs into your existing connector, so no factory wiring is cut.
- Steering wheel control adapter. Retains your volume, track and phone buttons on the wheel rather than losing them.
- Aerial adapter. Converts your car aerial plug to the standard DIN or Fakra fitting the new unit expects, and supplies phantom power where needed.
We stock fitting kits for every popular UK car and van, and we can bundle the correct parts with the head unit so it arrives as one complete kit.
