Two 12 inch subwoofers move twice the air of one, and that is the simplest route to bass you can feel through the seat at motorway speed. A double sub package takes care of the hard part: the enclosure is built for two drivers, the amplifier is sized for the combined load, and the wiring is included. This guide explains what is in the range, how twin sub systems are wired and powered, and what to think about before ordering.

Why go with two subwoofers

Doubling the cone area gives roughly 3 dB more output for the same power, and a further 3 dB when the amplifier power is doubled too. In practice that means a twin 12 inch setup sounds noticeably louder and stays composed at volumes where a single driver would be working at its limits. Two drivers also share the load, so each one runs cooler and lasts longer. The trade-off is boot space, so measure before you buy.

Wiring and power for two drivers

Two subwoofers are usually wired in parallel to present a lower impedance to the amplifier, which lets a mono amp deliver its full rated power. Check the amplifier is stable at that load before connecting. A twin 12 inch system draws serious current, so the power cable must be the correct gauge, the fuse rated correctly near the battery and the earth point clean and short. Most installs go smoothly when the right supporting parts are ordered alongside the main product. Check these before you buy:

• Fascia adapter. Fills the gap between an aftermarket head unit and the dashboard if you are upgrading the stereo at the same time.
• ISO harness. Connects a new stereo to the original wiring without cutting factory plugs.
• Steering-wheel control adapter. Keeps your factory wheel buttons working with a new head unit.
• Aerial adapter. Converts the vehicle aerial plug to the standard connector on aftermarket stereos.

Getting the best sound

Set the low-pass filter around 80 Hz, engage the subsonic filter on ported boxes and set the gain with the head unit at three quarters volume. Position the enclosure with the ports facing the tailgate and strap it down, because a heavy twin box that shifts under braking is both a rattle and a safety risk. If the bass lacks impact, flip the polarity on the sub amplifier and compare, as phase against the door speakers makes a big difference at low frequencies.
