How to spec a custom car bass package in 2026

A car audio bass package only sounds good if every link in the chain is matched. Subwoofer to enclosure, enclosure to amplifier, amplifier to wiring, wiring to vehicle electrical system. Get one piece wrong and the rest under-performs, either running thin or quickly running out of headroom. This guide explains what matters and how to brief us when you order a bundle so the package delivers exactly the low-end character you want from the first install.

Sealed or ported: which enclosure suits you?

Sealed boxes give tight, accurate bass that suits rock, pop, podcasts and classical. The roll-off is gradual and the response stays musical at low volumes. Ported enclosures give more output around the tuning frequency, ideal for electronic, hip-hop and bass-heavy soundtracks. They need a larger volume to work properly but reward the space with serious slam. Bandpass enclosures are a niche option for extreme SPL builds. We design and build all three styles in our workshop and can tune ported boxes to taste.

Subwoofer size and power matching

Pick the cone size by boot space, listening style and target SPL, not just on watts. A clean 300 watts RMS into a good 10 inch sub usually outperforms a noisy 1000 watts into a poorly matched 12. Sensitivity, mounting depth and free-air resonance all matter. We pair subs and amps from the same family or with combinations proven on our bench, so the gains line up and the sub never clips into thermal protection.

Amplifier choice: Class D efficiency

Modern monoblock Class D amplifiers are compact, run cool and draw less current than older Class AB designs. Look for a high-pass and low-pass crossover, a defeatable bass boost, a phase switch and a remote level control on the dash. Our packages always include the right amp size for your sub so the system never runs out of clean headroom and never under-drives the voice coil.

Wiring kit gauge and accessories

A bass package needs a complete wiring kit, not just power cable. We include a correctly sized power and ground, fuse holder, RCA leads, remote turn-on wire and speaker wire so nothing is borrowed from the head unit.

• 8 AWG kits. Suit mono amps up to roughly 600 watts.
• 4 AWG kits. Suit mono amps up to roughly 1000 watts.
• 0 AWG kits. For higher-power builds and dual subwoofer installs.
• OFC vs CCA. We use Oxygen Free Copper on premium kits for lower voltage drop.

Tuning the install: gain, phase and crossover

Once the kit is in, tuning is what makes it sing. Gain set with an oscilloscope or test tones, low-pass crossover around 80 to 90 Hz, phase set so the sub blends with the front speakers. Our packages come with a tuning guide and a phone-in tune-up appointment if you want help.
