Finishing an amplifier install in 2026

An amplifier is only as good as the parts around it. Undersized power cable, a poor earth or a cheap RCA lead will cost you more performance than the difference between two amplifiers at the same price. The accessories on this page cover the wiring, distribution, control and connection parts that turn a boxed amplifier into a system that plays cleanly and passes an MOT without a blown fuse. Most are inexpensive, and all of them prevent problems that are expensive to chase later.

Wiring kits and cable gauge

Match the kit to the current your amplifier actually draws, not the peak power printed on the box.

• 8 AWG kits. Suit amplifiers up to roughly 700 watts RMS on a short boot run, which covers most four channel installs.
• 4 AWG kits. The sensible default for a single subwoofer amplifier or a moderate multi amp build.
• 0 AWG kits. Reserved for high current systems where voltage drop over a long run would otherwise starve the amplifier.
• Oxygen free copper. Carries far more current than copper clad aluminium of the same gauge, so check the specification.

Fusing, distribution and earthing

A fuse must sit within 30cm of the battery terminal, sized to protect the cable rather than the amplifier. If you are running two or more amplifiers, a distribution block splits the feed cleanly and gives each unit its own fuse. Earths are where most installs fail. Take the earth to bare chassis metal, sand off the paint, use a star washer and keep the run as short as the power cable is long. A poor earth shows up as alternator whine that no filter will fully cure.

Bass knobs and remote controls

A dash mounted bass knob lets you lift or drop subwoofer level for different tracks without pulling over. It plugs into the amplifier remote port and takes seconds to fit. If your amplifier has onboard digital signal processing, a DSP remote gives you preset switching and tuning access as well, which is far more useful day to day than a single level dial.

Signal cables and interference

Twisted pair RCA leads with proper shielding reject the electrical noise a car generates. Run signal cables down the opposite side of the vehicle to the power cable, and cross them at right angles if they must meet. Where a factory head unit only offers speaker outputs, a line output converter gives you a preamp signal at the correct voltage rather than feeding high level into an input that was never designed for it.

• Aerial adapter. Converts the factory antenna plug to the standard DIN or SMB fitting the new hardware expects.

Getting the install right first time

Disconnect the battery before you run any power cable, and fit the grommet where the cable passes through the bulkhead so vibration cannot chafe through the insulation. Leave a service loop at the amplifier so the unit can be removed without cutting anything. Set gains last, with the head unit at three quarters volume and all tone controls flat.
