Choosing the right Infinity car audio for your vehicle
Infinity car audio is an American brand owned by Harman, sitting alongside JBL and Harman Kardon in the same engineering family. The line targets enthusiasts who want noticeably better sound than factory speakers without stepping all the way up to esoteric SQ pricing. The right Infinity product for your car depends on three things: your existing power source, the speaker apertures already in the doors, and whether you want a quick coaxial drop-in or a fully tweaked component set.
Reference vs Kappa range
Reference is the value-leading line. It uses fibreglass-reinforced polypropylene cones, silk-blend tweeters, and a sensitivity high enough to run cleanly from factory head-unit power. Kappa is the enthusiast tier with carbon-injected cones, edge-driven tweeters, and a higher power handling that suits owners pairing the speakers with an aftermarket amplifier. If you are running unamplified, choose Reference. If you have a four-channel amp ready, Kappa rewards the investment.
Sizes that fit UK vehicles
Infinity covers 4-inch, 5.25-inch, 6.5-inch, and 6 by 9-inch fitments, plus shallow-mount variants for vehicles with tight door cards or limited rear-shelf depth. Most UK family cars accept a 6.5-inch front door fit, while the parcel shelf usually takes a 6 by 9 oval. Always confirm depth and grille tab clearance before ordering, and pair coaxial purchases with a foam baffle to reduce road noise and water intrusion.
Brand quality at a glance
- Infinity Reference. Value-focused coaxials and components, easy to drive from factory head units.
- Infinity Kappa. Enthusiast-tier carbon-injected drivers with higher power handling and SQ-friendly tweeters.
- Infinity Primus. Older value tier still available in selected sizes, suited to budget refresh builds.
- Harman family pairing. Mates well with JBL amps and head units from the same engineering family.
- UK warranty cover. Every Infinity product we ship carries full UK manufacturer warranty.
Compatibility and fitting
- Fascia adapter. Not required for speaker upgrades alone, but useful when you bundle the install with a head-unit swap.
- ISO harness. Allows clean stereo replacement without disturbing the speaker leads at the factory connector.
- Steering-wheel control adapter. Retains your factory wheel buttons when the speaker upgrade is paired with a new head unit.
- Aerial adapter. Only needed when the speaker fit is bundled with a head-unit upgrade that requires DIN conversion.
Wiring and installation tips
Use the speaker brackets supplied with the Infinity unit rather than relying on the original car holder, as the new tweeter offset is often slightly different. Always fit a foam baffle around the rear of the magnet to control rear wave and to keep door-card moisture away from the cone. For component sets, place the tweeter as close to ear height as possible on the A-pillar or sail panel, and aim it across the cabin at the opposite headrest for the widest soundstage.
Pairing with amplifiers
Kappa components reward at least 60W RMS per channel. Reference coaxials are happy with 25 to 45W RMS, which most aftermarket head units can deliver on a quality 12V supply. If you are bridging a four-channel amp to drive Kappa, ensure the amp is rated to handle 2-ohm stable on bridged channels. A clean amplifier always beats more raw power, so prioritise low THD and good signal-to-noise ratings over headline wattage numbers.
