Smaller drivers need smaller boxes, so an 8 inch sub can hide behind a seat, under a parcel shelf or in a wheel arch. The trade off is less low frequency extension than a 12 inch, but for hatchbacks, coupes and vans the compact footprint wins. Checking fit before you buy

• Cutout diameter. Most 8 inch subs need a 180 to 190 mm hole. Compare your driver spec sheet with the box listing.
• Mounting depth. Shallow mount subs suit the wheel arch box best, while the sealed cube accepts deeper standard drivers.
• Internal volume. Aim for the driver manufacturer's recommended sealed volume, usually 8 to 14 litres for an 8 inch sub.

Installation and tuning tips

Use a foam gasket around the driver, tighten the screws evenly and wire the terminal cup with 12 or 14 gauge cable. Run the amplifier low pass filter at 80 Hz and the subsonic filter around 30 Hz. Secure the box with straps or brackets so it cannot move under braking, and if you fit the wheel arch enclosure, refit the boot trim carefully to keep it silent.
