An empty enclosure is the sensible starting point when you already have a subwoofer, or when you want to choose the driver and the box independently rather than accept whatever a loaded package includes. A ten inch box is the most popular size sold in the UK because it fits a hatchback boot without dominating it, and because ten inch drivers are made in enormous variety from mild SQ woofers to high excursion SPL units. Getting the enclosure right matters more than most people expect.

Why internal volume is the number that counts

Every subwoofer is designed to operate within a range of internal air volume, published by the manufacturer as a sealed or ported recommendation. Put a driver in a box that is too small and the bass becomes thin and over damped. Too large and it goes loose and boomy, and the driver loses mechanical control near its excursion limit. Check the litreage of the enclosure against the driver specification before you buy, and remember the driver and any bracing displace volume inside the box.

Sealed against ported

• Sealed. Tighter, faster and more accurate, with a gentle roll off that suits rock, acoustic and mixed listening. Needs less internal volume and is far more forgiving of a small boot.
• Slot ported. Noticeably louder around the tuning frequency, which suits electronic music, hip hop and anyone chasing output. Requires more volume and a driver rated for it.
• Twin chamber. Two isolated compartments for two drivers, which keeps each subwoofer in its own correct volume rather than sharing one airspace.

Choosing the right litreage

The 15 litre enclosures in this range suit sealed installs and compact SQ drivers where boot space is the priority. The 35 litre ported boxes are aimed at higher excursion subwoofers that need room to breathe and will reward you with considerably more output. If the driver specification quotes a range, aim for the middle of it rather than either extreme, and favour the smaller end if the boot is shared with luggage.

Build quality and what to look for

MDF is the standard material because it is dense, acoustically dead and cuts cleanly, and every enclosure here is fully carpeted so it will not scuff the boot lining. Look for a box with the terminal cup already fitted and sealed, braced corners and a flush mounting recess for the driver. A poorly sealed enclosure leaks air, which undoes the volume calculation entirely and can produce audible chuffing at high output.

Installation points worth knowing

Seal the driver to the enclosure with the supplied gasket or a bead of foam tape, because a leaking mounting flange will cost you output and add distortion. Secure the box to the boot floor with straps or brackets, since an unrestrained ten inch enclosure is a genuine hazard under heavy braking. Wire the subwoofer to an impedance the amplifier is rated for, and set the low pass filter around 80Hz to blend with the front stage.
