Why a custom fit 8 inch bass package works in 2026

A vehicle specific enclosure solves the problem that puts most people off adding bass, which is losing the boot. Instead of a rectangular box sitting in the load area, the cabinet is shaped to fill an existing void such as a wheel arch, a side panel or a seat base. You keep your luggage space, the install looks factory, and an 8 inch driver in the right volume still delivers genuine low end.

What is included in each package

• A vehicle specific enclosure. Shaped and braced for the named car so it locates securely without modifying the structure.
• A matched 8 inch subwoofer. Chosen so the driver parameters suit the internal volume of that particular cabinet.
• An amplifier where listed. Kicker DX Series and comparable monoblocks are paired to the driver impedance and RMS rating.
• Fitting hardware. Terminals, gasket and fixings so the driver seals correctly against the baffle.

Choosing between the drivers

• Kicker CompC. The value option at around 400 watts, ideal if you want a clear step up from the factory system without a large amplifier.
• Kicker CompR. Roughly 600 watts and noticeably harder hitting, suited to drivers who want the bass to be felt as well as heard.
• Kicker CompRT. A shallow mount 600 watt design for tight cabinets, giving high output where mounting depth is restricted.
• JL Audio 8 inch. Around 150 watts and the most accurate of the group, best where musical detail matters more than sheer volume.
• Alpine Type R SWR 8D4. The highest rated driver here at up to 1000 watts, for a small sub that behaves like a much bigger one.

Vehicle applications

The Audi A3 packages cover both the earlier 1996 to 2003 car and the 8P generation from 2003 to 2013, using enclosures designed for the boot side void so the spare wheel well stays accessible. The VW Transporter T5 kits are popular with trade and camper owners because the cabinet tucks into the cab or load area and survives daily working use. Power, wiring and settings

An 8 inch driver rewards a clean amplifier more than a big one. Set the gain with the head unit at around three quarters volume and the bass boost at zero, then raise gain only until the output is clean. A low pass filter near 80Hz blends the sub with the door speakers, and a subsonic filter around 25Hz protects the driver on ported cabinets. Always fuse the power cable within 30cm of the battery.

• Line output converter. Required when you keep the original stereo, converting speaker level output to RCA for the amplifier.

Keeping the factory stereo

Many Audi and Volkswagen owners want more bass without losing the original head unit, its screen or its steering wheel integration. A high level input on the amplifier, or a separate line output converter, takes signal from the rear speaker wires and feeds the sub cleanly. On cars with factory amplification you may also need a summing converter to recombine the crossed over signal before it reaches the subwoofer amplifier.
