The 2026 guide to 8 inch bass packages

A bass package removes the hardest part of adding bass to a car, which is not the fitting but the matching. Buy a subwoofer, an enclosure and an amplifier separately and you have to reconcile RMS ratings, impedance, internal volume and wiring gauge yourself. A package arrives with those decisions already made by the manufacturer, so the driver is in the right box and the amplifier delivers the power it was designed for. At eight inches you get real, usable bass without surrendering the boot.

Why eight inches is often the right choice

Ten and twelve inch subwoofers move more air, but they need considerably more enclosure volume and they are far harder to hide. An eight inch driver in a compact enclosure fits under a seat, behind a bulkhead or in a boot corner, and in a saloon or a van that is frequently the difference between a system that gets fitted and one that stays in the box. The trade off is depth rather than quality, and for most listening an eight inch package is more than enough.

What is included in a package

• The subwoofer and enclosure. Either a loaded box or a passive enclosure with the driver already mounted and sealed to the correct internal volume.
• A matched amplifier. Rated to the driver RMS at the correct impedance, so you are not underpowering or cooking the voice coil.
• The amp wiring kit. Power cable, earth, fuse holder, remote lead and signal cable in the correct gauge for the current draw.
• Vehicle specific brackets. Included on the Sprinter and Transporter kits, so the enclosure mounts to existing points without drilling.

DSP amplifiers and factory systems

Several packages here use a six channel DSP amplifier rather than a simple monoblock. That matters if you are keeping the factory head unit, because a DSP can take a high level signal from the standard stereo, undo the equalisation the manufacturer applied, and then feed the subwoofer and the front speakers with a correct signal. On a Mercedes Sprinter or a VW Transporter T6 this is usually the cleanest route to a better system, since the dash stays entirely standard.

Setting the gain correctly

The most common mistake with a package is turning the gain up until it sounds loud. Gain is a level matching control, not a volume control, and setting it too high sends a clipped signal to the subwoofer that will damage the voice coil long before the amplifier fails. Set the head unit to around three quarters volume, raise the gain until distortion is audible, then back it off. Set the low pass filter around 80Hz and leave the bass boost alone.

• Steering wheel control adapter. Retains the volume and track buttons on the wheel with an aftermarket stereo fitted.
• Aerial adapter. Converts the factory antenna plug and supplies phantom power on vehicles with an amplified aerial.

Installation points worth knowing

Run the power cable down one side of the vehicle and the RCA signal cables down the other, because running them together is the usual cause of alternator whine. Fit the fuse within 30cm of the battery terminal, earth the amplifier to bare chassis metal rather than a seat bolt, and strap the enclosure down properly.
