Sealed or ported enclosure

Sealed boxes are smaller and give tighter, more controlled bass that suits rock, indie and anything where accuracy matters more than volume. Ported boxes use a tuned vent to boost output around the tuning frequency, so they go louder and dig deeper on bass heavy genres, at the cost of size. If your boot is tight, start sealed. If you want the car to be felt from outside, go ported.

Power ratings and how to read them

• RMS is the number that matters. It describes continuous power the driver and amplifier can handle all day, and it is what you should match between sub and amp.
• Peak or max watts is marketing. A 1500 watt peak sub may only take 400 watts RMS, so never size an amplifier from the peak figure.
• Aim for a close match. An amplifier delivering between 75 and 125 percent of the subwoofer RMS rating gives clean headroom without clipping or thermal damage.
• Check impedance before you buy. Dual 4 ohm and dual 2 ohm subs wire to different final loads, and the amplifier must be stable at that load.

Matching the amplifier to the sub

• Face the port correctly. Ported boxes generally sound strongest with the port and cone facing the rear seats or the tailgate, not into a side panel.
• Secure the enclosure. A loose box rattles, damages trim and is a safety risk under braking, so strap or bracket it to a fixed point.
