Pod speakers are surface mount enclosures that add audio output without cutting into door panels or trim. Ideal for vans, cabs, custom builds and convertible installs, pods house full range or coaxial drivers in a tuned cabinet, giving louder sound with cleaner mid range. At Bass Junkies we stock pre built pods and empty cabinets so you can match driver size and finish to your fitting. Choose from compact 4 inch units up to 6.5 inch wide mount housings for solid, on axis output.

Pod speakers buying guide for 2026
Pod speakers solve a specific problem in mobile audio: you want extra speakers, stronger imaging or rear-fill in a vehicle where you can not, or do not want to, cut into door cards, headliners or kick panels. A pod is a sealed surface-mount cabinet that holds a driver, bolts to a flat surface, and aims the cone toward the listener. The result is louder output, cleaner mid-range and a tidy install that you can take back out without leaving holes in trim. This guide explains the popular sizes, when to choose ABS over MDF, and how to wire pods alongside your existing speaker system.
When pod speakers make sense
- Vans, panel vans and crew cabs. Bare metal walls give nowhere to mount a 6.5 inch driver flush, so a pod attached to the bulkhead or A-pillar is the cleanest fix.
- Roadsters and convertibles. Headrest pods and A-pillar pods push sound straight at the driver, beating wind noise without raising overall volume.
- Custom show builds. Pods let you stack additional drivers above the door line for full SPL coverage without modifying the original trim.
- Boats and ATVs. ABS pods with sealed grilles handle splash, dust and UV better than factory-style speaker mounts.
Pod sizes we stock
- 4 inch pods. Compact A-pillar and dash pods for tweeters, midranges or full-range coaxials. Ideal for tweeter relocation kits.
- 5.25 inch pods. The all-rounder size: enough cone area for solid mid-bass while still fitting tight cab corners.
- 6.5 inch pods. Our most popular pod, used for door-frame, bulkhead and roll-cage mounting in vans and 4x4s.
- 6 by 9 pods. Wide-mount enclosures for rear parcel shelf or van bulkhead duty, giving deep mid-bass without a sub.
- Empty pods. If you already own drivers, we stock unloaded cabinets so you can transplant existing speakers cleanly.
Sealed pods vs ported pods
Most car pod speakers are sealed cabinets. A sealed pod gives tight, controlled mid-bass, is easier to mount, and copes well with road vibration. Ported pods add a tuned vent that increases low-frequency output, useful when you are running coaxials full-range without a subwoofer. For van and bulkhead installs we recommend sealed pods unless the manufacturer pre-tunes a port for a specific driver, since unintended porting in a vibrating vehicle can rattle and create boomy resonance.

Compatibility and fitting
A pod install is mechanical first, electrical second. Confirm the depth available at the mount point, the bolt pattern of the driver you intend to fit, and how cabling will reach the head unit or amplifier.
- Fascia adapter. Not normally required for pods, but useful if you are running a paired head unit upgrade at the same time.
- ISO harness. Pair a pod install with an ISO-to-vehicle harness so the rest of your speaker wiring stays factory-clean.
- Steering-wheel control adapter. If pods replace damaged door speakers in a stock setup, a SWC adapter keeps your stalk buttons working.
- Aerial adapter. Worth pairing when pod installs accompany an aftermarket head unit so DAB and FM both stay reliable.
Powering pod speakers
Pods can run from head-unit power for simple van rear-fill, but most installs benefit from a small four-channel amplifier. Look for 50 to 75 watts RMS per channel into 4 ohm to match common 6.5 inch coaxials. If you wire two pairs of pods in parallel you will be looking at a 2 ohm load, so check the amplifier is stable at 2 ohm first. Use 14 AWG speaker wire as a minimum from amp to pod and keep runs short to avoid voltage drop.
Care, weatherproofing and warranty
Most ABS pods are splashproof rather than fully waterproof. If you are mounting outside the cab, use marine-grade drivers with rubberised cones and seal cable entry points with self-amalgamating tape. Indoor pods last for years with no maintenance beyond an occasional clean of the grille mesh. All speakers we stock are covered by their manufacturer warranty (typically 12 to 24 months) and we provide UK-based warranty handling, so any issues are dealt with from Wolverhampton, not overseas.
