DAB Car Stereos UK

Choosing a DAB car stereo in 2026

Digital radio is now the default in the UK, and a DAB car stereo gives you the national and local stations that simply do not exist on FM. Beyond the extra choice you get station names, track information and no hiss when the signal weakens. The units on this page range from straightforward single DIN radios with Bluetooth to full screen head units with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so there is a sensible upgrade whatever your dashboard allows.

Single DIN or double DIN

Measure the aperture in your dashboard before you shop.

• Single DIN. The classic 50mm tall slot found in most older cars, ideal for a compact DAB and Bluetooth radio.
• Double DIN. A 100mm tall aperture that takes a touchscreen unit with navigation, CarPlay and reversing camera input.
• Retro styled units. Chrome and classic faced radios that suit older vehicles while hiding modern DAB and USB-C features behind the fascia.

Features worth paying for

Bluetooth hands free calling and audio streaming are close to essential now, and most drivers use them far more than the radio. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto put your own maps and music on the screen, which removes the need for a phone cradle. A USB-C port that charges at a useful rate, at least two pairs of preamp outputs for adding an amplifier later, and a rear camera input are the specifications that stop a stereo feeling dated in two years.

Adapters instead of a new head unit

If you like your factory stereo, or the car has an integrated screen you cannot replace, a DAB adapter is the cheaper route. It sits behind the dash, receives digital stations and feeds them into the existing radio, usually through the FM tuner or an auxiliary input. You keep the original look and the steering wheel controls, and the cost is a fraction of a full head unit swap.

Sound quality upgrades

A new head unit almost always improves sound because the internal amplifier and digital to analogue conversion are better than a decade old factory unit. To go further, use the preamp outputs to run a small four channel amplifier to your door speakers, and add a compact active subwoofer under a seat. Set the head unit crossover so the door speakers are not asked to reproduce deep bass and the whole system cleans up.

Brand quality at a glance

We stock digital radios from the manufacturers installers rely on.

• Pioneer. Strong tuners, excellent sound processing and reliable CarPlay and Android Auto implementations.
• Kenwood. Well built double DIN screens with clear menus and generous preamp voltage for system building.
• Sony. Punchy audio and simple, fast interfaces at sensible prices.
• Alpine. Premium head units and vehicle specific systems for drivers who want the best fit and finish.
• Caliber and Grundig. Affordable DAB and Bluetooth units that cover the essentials without fuss.

Compatibility and fitting

Most installs need a small set of vehicle specific parts. Get these right and the job is straightforward.

• Fascia adapter. Fills the gap around the new unit so the finish matches your dashboard and nothing rattles.
• ISO harness. Plugs into the factory loom so you never cut original wiring, which protects resale value.
• Steering wheel control adapter. Keeps your volume, track and phone buttons working exactly as they did before.
• Aerial adapter. Converts the factory antenna plug to the standard DIN or SMB fitting the new hardware expects.

Fitting and setup

Fit the fascia and harness first and test the unit before you push it home, because reaching a loose connector afterwards means pulling the whole dash apart again. Remember that a DAB stereo needs a DAB aerial with an SMB fitting, not the original FM antenna, or reception will disappoint. Once installed, run a full scan, set the time from the DAB signal and pair your phone before you drive.
