A car specific speaker is designed around one manufacturer's door and dash apertures. The Focal Ford kits on this page use a purpose made basket that replicates the factory Ford fixing points, a moulded connector that clips onto the original loom and a sensitivity figure chosen to work with the standard head unit. You keep the factory grilles and trim, and the door goes back together exactly as it came apart.

Coaxial or component: which Focal kit to choose

• Focal IC FORD 165 coaxial. A two way 6.5 inch speaker with the tweeter mounted in the centre of the cone. Rated at 240 watts peak, it is the quickest upgrade and needs no extra tweeter location. Ideal for Fiesta, Focus, Kuga, Puma, EcoSport, Galaxy and Transit Custom doors.
• Focal IS FORD 165 component. A separate 6.5 inch woofer, dedicated tweeter and passive crossover rated at 120 watts RMS. The tweeters sit in the factory dash or mirror triangle positions for a wider, more detailed soundstage. Best for Fiesta, Kuga, Mondeo, Everest, Escape and Transit models where imaging matters.
• Front and rear pairs. Many Ford models list separate front door and rear door kits. Fit the fronts first, then add the rears when budget allows for a fuller cabin sound.

• Aerial adapter. Converts the vehicle aerial plug to the standard DIN or ISO fitting used by aftermarket radios.

Getting the most from your new speakers

Set the head unit bass tone control to flat for the first week while the surrounds loosen up. If you later add an amplifier, keep the high pass filter around 80 Hz so the 6.5 inch drivers concentrate on midrange and vocals while a subwoofer handles the low end. Sound deadening on the door skin is a cheap upgrade that tightens the midbass noticeably.
