The 2026 guide to camera retention interfaces

Modern cars do not send the reversing camera image down a simple video cable. The signal is encoded and routed through the factory head unit, which is why fitting an aftermarket stereo usually kills the camera picture. A camera retention interface sits between the vehicle loom and the new stereo, decodes that factory signal and outputs a standard composite video feed that any aftermarket head unit can display. It is the difference between keeping the camera you paid for and drilling a hole in the tailgate for a replacement.

What the interface actually does

Three things happen inside the adapter. It takes the proprietary camera output and converts it to a normal RCA video signal. It generates the reverse trigger wire that tells the new head unit to switch to the camera view when reverse gear is selected. On some models it also supplies the correct voltage to wake the camera, because the factory unit powers the camera only when it is called. Without the interface you typically get either a black screen or a picture that never switches on automatically.

Signs you need one

• The camera image disappeared after a stereo change. The most common symptom, and almost always a decoding rather than a wiring fault.
• The picture shows but does not switch automatically. The video is reaching the screen but the reverse trigger is missing.
• The image is present but rolling or monochrome. A signal format mismatch that the interface corrects.
• You are planning a head unit upgrade. Buy the interface with the stereo rather than discovering the problem on the driveway.

Choosing the right lead for your vehicle

These interfaces are not universal. The connector, the pinout and the signal format all vary by manufacturer, platform and model year, so the lead has to be matched to the exact vehicle. Check the registration year against the listing rather than the model name alone, because a facelift can change the connector mid generation.

Compatibility and fitting

Installation points worth knowing

Connect the interface before the head unit is finally seated, because it is far easier to reach the camera plug with the stereo out of the dash. The video output goes to the camera RCA input on the new unit, and the reverse trigger wire goes to the reverse or camera trigger input rather than to a switched live. Test the camera with the ignition on and the vehicle in reverse before you refit the trim, and if you are also retaining the wheel controls, pair this with a steering wheel control interface from the same fitting kit.
