Why a proper amp wiring kit matters
The amplifier you can hear in the showroom is only as good as the cable feeding it. An undersized power cable strangles output, drops voltage under heavy bass and trips fuses on cold mornings. A budget kit with weak ring terminals and a flimsy fuse holder is the leading cause of intermittent amplifier faults on UK street builds. Spending an extra twenty pounds on a properly sized OFC kit is the single best investment you can make alongside the amp itself.
Cable gauge guide for 2026
- 8 gauge. Suited to single amplifier installs up to roughly 300W RMS total system power. Perfect for a 4 channel speaker amp.
- 4 gauge. The UK street build standard. Handles 300W to 800W RMS comfortably, covers most single sub installs.
- 0 gauge. Required above 800W RMS and for any twin amplifier system. The only safe choice for SPL builds.
- 00 gauge. Reserved for serious competition installs with multiple high current amplifiers and dedicated batteries.
CCA vs OFC: do not get this wrong
Copper Clad Aluminium cable is cheaper because the conductor is aluminium with a thin copper coating. It looks the same on the outside but carries far less current per gauge than the marketing suggests. A 4 gauge CCA kit performs closer to a 6 gauge OFC kit in real terms. For any amplifier above 300W RMS, fit Oxygen Free Copper. The price difference is small. The reliability difference is huge.
What a complete amp wiring kit includes
- Power cable. Sized to the amplifier RMS, run from the battery positive to the amp inside the boot.
- Fuse holder and fuse. Sited within 30cm of the battery positive terminal, rated to match the cable gauge.
- Ground cable. Short matched gauge run from the amplifier ground terminal to a clean chassis bolt.
- Remote turn-on lead. Thin signal cable from the head unit remote output to the amp remote input.
- RCA interconnects. Twisted pair shielded RCAs carrying the line level signal from the head unit to the amplifier.
- Speaker cable. OFC 12 or 14 gauge from the amplifier to the subs and speakers, sized to power and run length.
Brand quality at a glance
- Stinger. Industry benchmark OFC kits, used in countless UK competition builds.
- ConnectS2. Strong value OFC kits with proper ring terminals and quality fuse holders.
- Phoenix Gold. Premium OFC ranges, MPCA and TPCA kits favoured for show builds.
- Vibe. Reliable mid tier kits with bundled distribution blocks at sensible money.
- Edge and Audison. Specialist tuning house kits, matched to their own amplifier ranges.
- Hollywood and Hertz. European premium OFC, popular on Audison and Hertz based installs.
Compatibility and fitting
- Fuse rating. Match the in-line fuse to the cable, not the amplifier. A 4 gauge cable takes a 100 amp fuse maximum.
- Distribution block. Required if you run two amplifiers from a single 0 gauge feed at the battery.
- Ring terminals. Use the supplied terminals, crimped and heat shrunk. Twisting bare strands round a screw is a fire risk.
- Grommets. A rubber grommet protects the cable where it passes through the firewall and boot panels.
- Cable ties and clips. Route the cable down the opposite side of the car from the RCAs to avoid alternator whine.
Common installation mistakes
The most common faults we see are an undersized ground cable, a fuse holder mounted too far from the battery, and RCAs run alongside the power cable causing audible engine noise. A few minutes of planning at install time prevents weeks of intermittent faults later. If in doubt, send a photo of your boot layout to the team and we will sketch the safer route.
