Choosing the right 5x7 or 6x8 car speakers in 2026
Five by seven and six by eight are direct-fit oval sizes used as factory door speakers in many Ford, Mazda and Lincoln vehicles. The two sizes share the same mounting pattern, so most aftermarket pairs cover both fitments. Pick a coaxial for a quick plug in upgrade or step up to a component-style oval kit if you want a separate tweeter mounted higher in the door for a better soundstage.
Direct fit versus speaker adapter
A direct fit 5x7 or 6x8 drops straight into the factory hole using the original screws, with no cutting and no bracket. Some aftermarket coaxials use a generic 6x8 frame and supply a plastic adapter to span the gap. Either approach works, but a direct fit pair gives the tidiest finish and the strongest mounting flange seal against the door card.
Power handling explained
- 40W to 60W RMS. Direct head unit upgrade with no amplifier required.
- 70W to 100W RMS. Pair with a four channel amplifier for the strongest typical street build.
- 100W RMS plus. Performance ovals for full SQ door builds with deadening.
Brand quality at a glance
- Pioneer. The widest UK stocking range of direct fit 5x7 and 6x8 ovals.
- JBL. Solid mid bass and strong value with the GTO and Stadium ranges.
- Alpine. SQ-focused ovals with smooth highs and tight bass.
- Kenwood. Reliable factory replacement coaxials at sensible prices.
- Sony. Lightweight pairs with high peak power figures.
Which cars take 5x7 or 6x8
The 5x7 and 6x8 fitment is most common on Ford Focus, Fiesta, Mondeo, Transit, Ranger and S-Max, plus several Mazda and Lincoln models. Modern Fords use a wider 1 inch tweeter in a separate dash mount, so a 2-way oval gives the cleanest upgrade in the doors with the factory dash tweeter retained or replaced separately. Always check the door cutout before ordering.
Compatibility and fitting
- Speaker harness. Plug and play tails for Ford Focus, Fiesta, Mondeo and Transit retain the factory connector.
- Door damping. Butyl mat on the outer skin and the inner door card transforms mid bass.
- Speaker brackets. Plastic adapters where the factory hole is smaller than the aftermarket frame.
- Aerial adapter. Often replaced at the same time on Ford installs for clean DAB reception.
Power source and amplification
Most modern Ford head units output around 17W RMS per channel. The same speaker run on a small four channel class D amp roughly doubles the apparent output and stays clean at the top end. Add a remote level knob if you also run a sub so you can balance fronts and rears against the bass bin.

Common Ford door installation tips
Ford door cards on Focus and Mondeo use a folded clip pattern that benefits from a panel removal kit before you start. Disconnect the battery, remove the door handle trim, lift the card from the bottom edge and pull straight out at the clips, then unplug the window switch loom and tweeter feed. Refit the moisture barrier with butyl tape once the new speaker is mounted, otherwise water tracks down the inside of the card and damages the speaker frame over time.
Sealing the new speaker for proper mid bass
Mid bass from a 5x7 or 6x8 lives or dies on how well the new driver seals to the door card. Use closed cell foam tape around the speaker flange before tightening the screws. Add butyl mat on the outer door skin behind the speaker hole, then trim a small panel of foam to cover the open card window. Sealing the driver makes the same speaker pair sound twice as loud at the same head unit volume.
