Custom bass packages in 2026: matched subs, amps and wiring
A custom bass package takes the guesswork out of adding low-end. Instead of buying a sub, an amp and a wiring kit separately and hoping they all play nicely, you get a sealed system designed and tested as one. Drop it in the boot, run four wires, and your car has proper bass without the headache of impedance maths or box volume calculations.
What is in a typical package
- Subwoofer. Single 10, 12 or 15 inch driver, sometimes a dual setup for higher output.
- Enclosure. Sealed or ported box, voiced to suit the driver and your boot space.
- Amplifier. Monoblock Class D amp matched to the sub's RMS and impedance.
- Amp wiring kit. Power, ground, remote, RCA and speaker wire, all in one box.
- Bass remote. Optional dash knob to dial level on the fly.
Sealed vs ported enclosures
Sealed boxes give tight, controlled bass that suits rock, indie and acoustic. Ported boxes give louder, deeper output that suits drum and bass, dubstep, hip-hop and any genre where you want the music to hit you in the chest. Most matched packages use a sealed box for daily-driver use because the bass blends better with stock front speakers and the boot stays usable for shopping.
Single 10 vs single 12 vs dual setups
A 10 inch sub fits the boot of a Corsa, Polo or Fiesta without losing useable space. A 12 inch sub is the SPL sweet spot and the most popular choice in UK estates and saloons. Dual 12 packages double the cone area and the output, but they take up a serious chunk of boot. A 15 inch sub is the choice for SPL-focused builds where pure output beats everyday practicality.
Brand quality at a glance
- Kicker. US-built CompR and CompC packages, punchy and reliable.
- Vibe Audio. UK favourite for SPL-focused dual setups at the price.
- JL Audio. Premium clean SQ packages with sealed enclosures.
- Phoenix Gold. Strong value matched mono amp plus loaded box combos.
- Pioneer. Tidy plug-and-play TS-WX series for first-time bass upgrades.
- Rockford Fosgate. Hard-hitting Punch and Prime ranges with serious low-end.
Compatibility and fitting
Even with a matched package, you still need to wire it into the car. The standard add-on parts are:
- Amp wiring kit. 4-gauge or 8-gauge depending on amp power draw.
- Remote wire tap. From the head unit's blue remote out, or a high-low converter on factory radios.
- RCA cables. Twisted shielded pair to reject alternator noise.
- High-low converter. If you are keeping a factory head unit with no preamp outputs.
- Bass blocker capacitors. Cleaner low-end on small front speakers.
Boot space and practicality
Measure the boot before ordering. A sealed 12 inch box is typically 380mm deep, 750mm wide and 350mm tall, which leaves shopping room in most hatchbacks. Dual 12 ported boxes need closer to 500mm of depth and dominate the boot. Custom under-seat packages for vans and pickups give bass without losing any boot at all, ideal for Transit and Hilux builds.
Power and tuning
Match the amp's RMS to the sub's RMS rating, not the peak number. A 500W RMS sub wants a 400 to 600W RMS amp at the correct impedance. Set the amp's gain by ear with the head unit at 75 percent volume and a familiar track, then back the gain off until distortion disappears.
