Custom bass boxes: vehicle specific subs for 2026 installs
A custom bass box is a subwoofer enclosure moulded to fit a specific car or van, usually behind a side panel, in the spare wheel well or under a load floor. The box hides cleanly, leaves boot space free and tunes the sub to a known volume so the low end is tight rather than boomy. Bass Junkies stocks vehicle specific custom boxes from Vibe, JL Audio, Kicker and more.
Why a custom box beats a generic enclosure
Generic ported and sealed boxes are designed for an average vehicle. A custom bass box is shaped to the panels and trim of one specific car, which means no wasted boot space, no rattles against a flat box, and a sealed or ported chamber tuned to the right Hz for that body shell. The result is more usable bass, a quieter ride and a passenger space that still looks factory.
Where the box mounts
- Side panel boxes. Replace the plastic boot side trim with a fibreglass sub enclosure, common in hot hatches.
- Spare wheel well boxes. Drop into the well, leaving the boot floor flat.
- Underseat boxes. Sit under the front or rear seats, used in vans and pickups.
- Stealth boxes. Carpeted to match factory trim, virtually invisible at a glance.
Sealed versus ported, slim versus deep
Sealed custom boxes are tighter, lower in volume and more musical, ideal for SQ builds on a single 10 or 12 inch driver. Ported designs go deeper and louder for the same amplifier power, better for SPL leaning systems. Slim mount drivers fit shallow boxes in tight cars such as Mini, Golf and Corsa, while deep mount drivers fit larger vans and estates.
Brand quality at a glance
- Vibe. Strong value boxes plus shallow mount Pulse and Optisound subs.
- JL Audio. Premium Stealthbox enclosures matched to specific vehicles.
- Kicker. Down4Sound style sealed and ported customs for SPL.
- Phoenix Gold. Quality British engineered boxes with neat finishes.
- Audison. High end fibreglass boxes for premium Italian installs.
- Bassworx. Pickup and van specific underseat solutions.
Compatibility and fitting
Custom boxes are always supplied for a specific car or van, often with the matching driver pre installed. Allow space for a monoblock amp, an amp wiring kit and a remote bass controller for the cabin.
- Fascia adapter. Not needed for a sub install, included here for reference if a full system upgrade is planned.
- ISO harness. Optional, only if the head unit is being upgraded at the same time.
- Steering wheel control adapter. Optional, only on a paired head unit upgrade.
- Aerial adapter. Optional, only on a paired head unit upgrade.
- Amp wiring kit. Essential. Match power cable gauge to amp rating.
Recommended pairings
For a single 10 inch slim sub in a Golf or Corsa, a 300 to 500 watt RMS Class D monoblock is the right match. For a 12 inch ported custom in a van or estate, step up to 600 to 1000 watt RMS. Tune the low pass crossover around 80Hz, set the subsonic filter to 25Hz on ported designs and keep gain set by ear with a clean source signal, not at the limit.
