The 2026 buying guide to 6.75 inch and 17cm car speakers

The 6.75 inch driver, badged 17cm across most of Europe, sits in the front doors of an enormous number of cars sold in Britain. It is a genuinely useful size because the extra cone area over a 6.5 inch speaker delivers firmer mid bass, yet the frame still drops into the factory hole in most Ford, Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Renault and Peugeot models. This guide covers what to look for and how to get the best from the upgrade.

Coaxial or component, and which suits you

• Coaxial. Tweeter mounted on the woofer, one hole to fill and one cable to run. The straightforward choice for a direct replacement.
• Component. Separate tweeter and passive crossover, letting you mount the tweeter on the sail panel or A pillar for a much higher soundstage.
• Shallow mount. Reduced mounting depth for doors with tight window mechanisms, common on smaller hatchbacks.

Why 17cm beats a 6.5 inch swap

The difference is modest on paper and obvious in the car. A 17cm cone moves around fifteen per cent more air than a 16.5cm one, and because door mounted speakers carry most of the mid bass in a system without a subwoofer, that extra displacement lands exactly where factory systems are weakest. Kick drums gain weight and bass guitar lines stop disappearing behind road noise.

Power handling and matching your source

• Head unit driven. Look for sensitivity above 90dB and an RMS rating between forty and seventy watts.

• Steering wheel control adapter. Keeps the wheel mounted volume and track buttons working with an aftermarket stereo.
• Aerial adapter. Matches the factory antenna plug to a standard DIN input so reception stays strong.
• Speaker adapter rings. Most Volkswagen, Ford and Vauxhall doors need a ring to convert the fixing pattern and add clearance.

Sound deadening makes the difference

A door skin is a thin, resonant panel with large holes in it, which is the worst enclosure a speaker could ask for. Applying deadening mat to the outer skin and sealing the inner access holes turns that door into something closer to a sealed box. The result is tighter bass, lower distortion and less road noise, and it costs far less than moving up a price bracket in speakers.

What to budget in 2026

• Under fifty pounds. Honest coaxial replacements that restore clarity to a tired factory system.
• Fifty to one hundred and twenty pounds. Better motors and cones, with the mid bass authority most people are chasing.
• Above one hundred and twenty pounds. Component sets and audiophile drivers intended for amplified front stages.
