The 2026 guide to 4x6 car speakers

The 4x6 inch oval is one of those sizes that exists purely because of packaging. Manufacturers needed a driver that would fit a shallow dash pod or a narrow parcel shelf without the depth a round speaker demands, and the oval was the answer. That means a 4x6 is almost always a direct replacement rather than a free choice, so the important question is not which size to buy but which 4x6 gives you the most improvement in the space you already have.

Why oval drivers behave differently

An oval cone has more radiating area than a 4 inch round driver but less than a 6.5 inch, so it sits between the two for midrange weight. What it gives up is low end extension, because the shorter axis limits how far the cone can travel before the surround restricts it. In practice a 4x6 is excellent for vocals, guitars and general clarity, and should almost always be paired with a subwoofer or larger door speaker to carry the bottom end.

The types you will find here

• Coaxial. The tweeter mounted on the same axis as the woofer, giving full range sound from a single unit. The straightforward drop in replacement.
• Component. Separate woofer, tweeter and crossover, letting you mount the tweeter higher for a much better soundstage. Worth the extra effort in a front position.
• Vehicle specific kits. Drivers engineered for one platform, with the correct depth, mounting pattern and impedance already matched to the car.

Where these speakers usually fit

The classic 4x6 positions are the rear parcel shelf on older saloons, the dash corners on Japanese models from the nineties and early two thousands, and the upper door pods on some American platforms. Alongside the true ovals, this range also includes 4 inch and 10cm component kits for BMW and Mini, which cover the small front positions on those platforms. Always measure the mounting depth as well as the aperture, because shelf and dash pods are frequently shallower than they look.

Power and driving them properly

A 4x6 does not need a large amplifier, and in fact most are quite happy on head unit power. What matters far more is the high pass filter. Set it around 100Hz so the driver is not being asked to reproduce bass it physically cannot deliver, because that is what causes distortion and eventually kills the voice coil. If you are running them from an amplifier, match the RMS rating rather than the peak figure and leave the bass boost switched off.

• DLS. Swedish engineering, strongest here in the vehicle specific CRPP component kits for BMW, Mini and Z4 positions.
• Ground Zero. German built coaxials such as the GZCS 46CX, a solid direct replacement with a noticeable lift over factory drivers.
• Recoil. The RLX462 and similar, offering honest performance at an accessible price for a straight parcel shelf swap.
• Kicker and Pioneer. Widely available across our broader speaker range when a specific power handling or sensitivity is wanted.

Compatibility and fitting

• Fascia adapter. Needed if you are fitting a new head unit at the same time, so the stereo sits flush in the dash aperture.
• ISO harness. Lets the new head unit plug into the factory loom with no cutting, keeping the installation fully reversible.
• Steering wheel control adapter. Retains the volume, track and phone buttons on the wheel after an aftermarket stereo goes in.
• Aerial adapter. Converts the factory antenna plug to a DIN connector and supplies phantom power where the vehicle needs it.

Installation points worth knowing

Check the magnet clearance before you commit, because parcel shelf positions often have a boot hinge or a seatbelt reel directly behind them. Use foam tape to seal the speaker to the shelf or pod, since an unsealed oval loses much of its midrange body.
