How to choose a brake light camera in 2026
Brake light reversing cameras replace the third brake light in your van or pickup with a unit that hides a wide angle camera, a parking sensor or both. They are the cleanest way to add reversing vision to a commercial vehicle in 2026 because the housing is already fitted, already wired and already weather sealed by the factory. This guide covers what to look for, which vans we cover and what else you may need for a tidy install.
Why a brake light cam beats a tailgate camera
Most cheap reversing cameras fit on the tailgate handle or licence plate. They work but they introduce two problems: an unsightly aftermarket housing and a wiring loom that crosses the boot or rear door rubber gaiter. Brake light cameras avoid both. The housing is OE shaped, painted to colour or supplied in factory black, and the loom routes through the same path your existing brake light feed uses. Result: nothing visible until you reverse.
Camera quality and night vision
Image quality varies more than the listing photos suggest. The headline specs to check are sensor type, aperture, low light response and the position of the IR cluster. Our 2026 stock leans on three things:
- CMOS sensors. 720p or 1080p with HDR for high contrast scenes like underground car parks and bright tailgates.
- Infrared LEDs. A discreet IR ring around the lens gives a clean picture in pitch dark loading bays without lighting up the inside of the van.
- Wide angle optics. 130 to 170 degree lenses with parking guide lines layered on the video output through the head unit.
Vehicles we cover
Our brake light camera range is specifically engineered for the most popular UK commercial and camper platforms in 2026. Stocked fitments include:
- Ford Transit. Custom, full size and Tourneo variants from 2014 to current shape.
- Mercedes Sprinter and VW Crafter. Shared platform models 2018 onward, both single and twin rear door bodies.
- Renault Master, Vauxhall Movano and Nissan NV400. Drop in fit for the high level brake light cluster.
- Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer, Citroen Relay. Including motorhome conversions built on the X290 chassis.
- VW Transporter T5, T6 and T6.1. Both barn door and tailgate variants.
- Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. Pickup specific kits with hardtop pass through option.
Display options
Brake light cameras are camera only units. You need a screen. Three routes work in 2026: a factory head unit that already accepts a reverse video input (with the right interface adapter), an aftermarket Pioneer, Kenwood or Sony double DIN unit, or a stand alone clip on rear view mirror monitor. The aftermarket head unit route gives the cleanest end result because reverse engagement triggers the screen automatically through the gear position signal.
Compatibility and fitting
To complete a clean brake light camera install you will usually need a small bundle of supporting parts. Plan for:
- Reverse trigger feed. A signal wire run from the reversing light to the camera and the head unit, often with a relay to remove signal noise.
- Video cable. A shielded RCA extension long enough to reach from rear panel to dashboard, routed under interior trim.
- Fascia adapter and ISO harness. Required if you are also upgrading the head unit at the same time.
- Steering wheel control adapter. Keeps factory steering wheel buttons working with the new screen.
- Aerial adapter. Maintains radio reception when swapping the OE head unit out.
Brand quality at a glance

Installation: DIY or fitted
A confident home installer can complete a brake light camera fit in around three to four hours with basic tools. The trickier vans (Sprinter and Crafter high roofs) benefit from professional fitting because of headlining drop down requirements. Our Wolverhampton workshop offers full supply and fit on every van listed above, with same day turnaround on most platforms when booked in advance.
