Portable power stations: the complete 2026 buying guide

A portable power station is simply a large rechargeable battery with an inverter and a set of sockets built in. That description undersells how useful they have become. Silent, emission free and safe to run indoors, they have replaced petrol generators for most UK users. This guide explains how to size one correctly, which specifications matter, and where the money is genuinely well spent.

Sizing a unit to your needs

Two figures govern everything. Watt hours describe stored energy and therefore runtime. Watts describe how much the unit can deliver at any instant and therefore what appliances it will run. Buying a large capacity unit with a small inverter is the classic mistake, so identify your heaviest appliance first and let that set the minimum output rating.

• Under 500Wh. Phones, tablets, laptops, camera batteries, LED lighting and a CPAP machine overnight.
• 500Wh to 1500Wh. Compressor fridges, TVs, drone kit, cordless tool chargers and long weekends away.
• 1500Wh to 3000Wh. Kettles, microwaves, coffee machines, site tools and multi day off grid use.
• Over 3000Wh. Home backup during outages, workshop equipment and semi permanent off grid setups.

Battery chemistry and expected lifespan

Almost every current unit worth owning uses lithium iron phosphate, usually written LiFePO4 or LFP. Expect around 3000 cycles to eighty per cent of original capacity, against roughly 500 to 800 for older lithium ion packs. LFP is also markedly more thermally stable, which matters for a battery stored in a van, an awning or a loft. Check the chemistry before comparing prices, because the cheapest unit is rarely the cheapest per cycle.

Pure sine wave output explained

Look for a pure sine wave inverter rather than a modified sine wave. Pure sine reproduces the waveform of mains electricity, which sensitive equipment requires. Modified sine can cause buzzing in audio gear, overheating in motors and outright refusal to run in medical devices such as CPAP machines. Flexibility in recharging is what separates a good station from a great one. Mains charging is fastest and many units now reach eighty per cent within an hour. Vehicle charging through the 12V socket is slow but useful for topping up between sites.
