Start with the head unit aperture

Older Mazda models built up to roughly 2010 use a conventional single or double DIN aperture, which makes a straight swap simple with the correct fascia. Later cars with the MZD Connect screen sit in a moulded dashboard panel, so the sensible route is usually to keep the screen and improve the speakers, amplification and bass instead. Confirm your build year before ordering, because Mazda changed looms mid generation on several models.

Speakers make the biggest difference

If you only change one thing, change the speakers. Factory Mazda drivers are paper coned and lose detail quickly once the volume rises. A quality component or coaxial set in the standard door apertures lifts vocal clarity immediately, and because the sizes are common the fitting rings are inexpensive.

Front doors. Usually 6.5 inch on most Mazda models, occasionally with a shallow mounting depth that needs a spacer ring.
Rear doors or shelf. Often 6x9 or 6.5 inch depending on body style, best used to fill in rather than lead the sound stage.
Tweeters. Many Mazda trims already have an A pillar or sail panel tweeter position, which suits a component set neatly.

Adding bass without losing the boot

An underseat or compact active enclosure is the practical answer for a Mazda 2 or MX-5 where boot space is tight. These units combine subwoofer, enclosure and amplifier in one chassis and run from a simple power feed and a high level input, so no head unit RCA outputs are required. On a CX-5 or Mazda 6 there is room for a sealed or ported enclosure behind the rear seat if you want more output.

Sound deadening is the cheap win

Mazda door skins are thin, so much of the energy from a new speaker is lost as panel vibration. Butyl matting on the outer skin tightens the mid bass and cuts road noise. It takes an hour per door.
