Power cable for car amps and subs in 2026
Power cable is the unsexy part of any car audio build, but get it wrong and even a one thousand pound amplifier will sound flat, clip early, and run hot. Bass Junkies stocks tinned OFC and CCA cable from 8 AWG through to 0 AWG, plus complete amp wiring kits from Stinger, KICKER, JL Audio, FOUR Connect, Audio Art, and Connection. Whether you are powering a single class D monoblock or a dual amp competition rig, the right gauge cable matters more than most people realise.
OFC vs CCA: the truth
Oxygen Free Copper carries current with almost no voltage drop and stays cool under load. Copper Clad Aluminium is cheaper but the actual copper layer is microns thick, so under a real world load CCA loses up to thirty per cent voltage compared with OFC of the same gauge. Rule of thumb: if you are running anything above 600 watts RMS, run OFC. CCA is fine for daily commuter rigs at 300 watts and under.
Sizing the cable correctly
Use the chart below as a starting point. Always check your amplifier handbook for the fuse rating it expects, then match the cable to the run length.
- 8 AWG OFC. Up to 300 watts RMS. Runs under four metres.
- 4 AWG OFC. 300 to 800 watts RMS. Standard pick for one mid class D amp.
- 2 AWG OFC. 800 to 1500 watts RMS. Big Lanzar, KICKER, or Phoenix Gold installs.
- 1/0 AWG OFC. 1500 watts RMS and beyond. SPL rigs and dual amp builds.
What goes in a proper amp wiring kit
You need more than just a length of red cable. A complete install includes power cable from battery to amp, ground cable to chassis, a fused distribution block if running multiple amps, an in line fuse holder near the battery, signal RCA leads, remote turn on wire, and speaker cable to the subs and door speakers. Pre packaged kits save you sourcing each item individually and almost always work out cheaper.
Brand quality at a glance
- Stinger. US market leader. SHK series Pro kits are bench tested OFC with massive fuse holders.
- KICKER. Premium Hyper Flex jacketed cable. Stays supple in cold weather and runs cooler than rivals.
- JL Audio. XD AMPKIT series is a no compromise OFC option, often pre matched to JL XD amplifiers.
- FOUR Connect. Finnish kits, popular with EU SPL competitors and very high spec for the money.
- Connection by Audison. Italian craftsmanship. Best in class jacketing and end terminations.
- Vibe. UK favourite for value amp kits at the entry to mid level price point.
Compatibility and fitting
Order the right ancillary parts with your cable. Skipping these is the most common reason a new install fails MOT or trips a CANbus.
- In line fuse holder. Mounted within thirty centimetres of the positive battery terminal. Required by UK fitting standards.
- Distribution block. Splits one positive feed to two or more amps cleanly.
- Ring terminals. Crimped or soldered to match cable gauge. Avoid undersized eyelets.
- Heat shrink and conduit. Especially important on the bulkhead pass through.
Tinned vs untinned conductors
Tinned copper resists corrosion, salt spray, and humidity. If you live by the coast, drive a daily that sees grit and salt over winter, or run a marine install on a boat or jet ski, choose tinned every time. The premium is only ten to twenty per cent and the kit will last five times longer in service.
Workshop fitting in Wolverhampton
We fit amp wiring kits daily in our Phoenix Road workshop. Most single amp installs take ninety minutes including a clean grounding point, a tucked away fuse holder, and signal cable routed away from the loom to avoid alternator whine. Multi amp builds are quoted on the day.
