How to choose a subwoofer bass package in 2026
A subwoofer bass package is the easiest, fastest and most cost-effective way to add proper low-end to any car. Each package is matched at the factory so the subwoofer, the enclosure and the amplifier work in perfect tune, removing the guesswork and the impedance maths. This guide explains what to expect, what power level you need and how to fit a package cleanly in a UK car.
What a complete subwoofer package includes
Every Bass Junkies bass package contains the parts you need to add bass without buying anything else separately, beyond the wiring kit.
- Subwoofer driver. Pre-matched to the enclosure size and porting, normally 8, 10, 12 or 15 inch.
- Sealed or ported enclosure. Built to the manufacturer's exact volume specification for the included driver.
- Matched amplifier. Tuned to the driver's RMS rating, with crossover and bass boost preset for the package.
- Wiring loom. Speaker cable from amp to sub, ready cut to the right length.
- Mounting hardware. Bolts, washers and grille screws so installation is bolt-and-go.
Active versus passive bass packages
Passive bass packages contain the sub and the enclosure only. You add your own amplifier and tune it to suit. Active bass packages include the amplifier inside the enclosure, ready to run from the head unit's pre-outs or high-level inputs. Active is faster to install, takes less boot space and is the smart choice for first-time buyers. Passive gives you full control if you already own an amplifier you want to keep.
Choosing the right power level
More power is not always better. Match the package wattage to your existing speakers so the bass blends naturally rather than swamps the mids. A rough rule of thumb for UK saloons and hatchbacks works well.
- 150 to 300 watts RMS. Great for daily-driver upgrades where you want noticeable, musical bass without losing boot space.
- 400 to 600 watts RMS. Confident hit on modern pop, rap and electronic music, suits 12 inch active packages.
- 700 to 1200 watts RMS. Serious bass for show or competition use, requires upgraded wiring and second battery in some cases.
Brand quality at a glance
- Kicker. Loud, dependable bass with the popular CompC and Hideaway packages.
- JL Audio. Premium American sub engineering, the Stealthbox and ACP packages set the sound-quality benchmark.
- Pioneer. Best value active packages, hard to beat under 200 pounds for a complete kit.
- Rockford Fosgate. Strongest mid-range driver behind the bass, the Punch range is a UK favourite.
- Vibe Audio. British brand, popular for compact spare-wheel and underseat packages.
- Ground Zero and Match. German engineering, clean tight bass that suits modern music genres.
Compatibility and fitting
A bass package needs a power feed from the battery and a signal feed from the head unit. The supporting parts below complete a tidy install.
- Fascia adapter. Lets the new head unit sit flush in your factory dashboard opening without cutting or modification.
- ISO harness. Plug-and-play wiring loom that connects the new stereo to your car's original electrical loom without splicing.
- Steering-wheel control adapter. Keeps your existing wheel-mounted volume, track and phone buttons working with the new aftermarket head unit.
- Aerial adapter. Converts your car's factory aerial connector to the DIN-style input found on most aftermarket stereos so radio reception stays strong.
Installation: time and complexity
An active 8 inch underseat package can be fitted in 30 to 45 minutes by a confident DIY installer using a wiring kit. A boot-mounted 12 inch package typically takes 1 to 2 hours. Our Wolverhampton workshop fits packages from 99 pounds labour, including amplifier wiring, signal pickup from the head unit and a full sound-quality tune at the end.
Matching subwoofer to musical taste
Sealed enclosures give tighter, faster bass that suits rock, indie and acoustic music. Ported enclosures hit harder and louder, favouring rap, dance, drum and bass, and modern pop. The Bass Junkies team can recommend the right package for your favourite genre when you call or message.
