DAB integration kits that keep the original stereo

A DAB integration kit is the cleanest way to gain digital radio without replacing a working head unit. The kit holds its own DAB and DAB+ tuner, takes audio out via a low-power FM transmitter into the factory radio, and uses a small touchscreen to show station name and DLS text. The factory dash, steering wheel controls and reverse camera all keep working exactly as before.

AutoDAB GO-PLUS and how it works

The AutoDAB GO-PLUS is the best-selling plug and play kit. A small black box with a 3.5 inch touchscreen sits on the dash or by the gear lever. Power comes from the cigar lighter or a hard wired loom. The DAB aerial sticks to the inside of the windscreen, and the audio reaches the factory radio either through a low-power FM link or a direct 3.5mm input where the head unit supports it.

Compatibility and fitting

• DAB aerial. Roof or windscreen patch aerial is required so the kit picks up DAB and DAB+ multiplexes reliably.
• Fascia adapter. Only required when the DAB kit is combined with a new head unit upgrade.
• ISO wiring harness. Useful for vehicles where the kit needs switched live and ground from the head unit loom.
• Aerial adapter. Fakra to DIN adapter is needed on VW, Ford and Mercedes when also fitting an aftermarket stereo.

How long fitting takes

A surface-mount kit with the touchscreen on the dash and the DAB aerial inside the windscreen takes 30 to 45 minutes from boxed to playing. A hidden install behind the dash takes longer because trim has to come off to route the aerial up the A-pillar and hide the control box under the glovebox or in the centre console. Either route is well within scope of a confident DIY fitter with a basic trim removal kit.

Choosing the right kit

If the factory radio has a 3.5mm aux input, choose a kit that uses that input for cleaner audio. If the radio only has FM, choose a kit with a low-power FM transmitter and tune it to a clear local frequency well away from the strongest local FM broadcast. For VW Group, Ford and Vauxhall, ask for the Connects2 vehicle-specific loom so the touchscreen sits in a factory blanking plate. For motorhomes and HGVs, choose a kit with a powered amplified aerial and a sticky-back ground plane so DAB reception remains solid across motorway service areas, tunnels and rural A-road dips.
