Car DAB aerial buying guide for 2026
Most UK roads now have strong Band III coverage, so picking the right DAB aerial is more about car fit, signal cleanliness and looks than raw reception. This 2026 guide explains the four main aerial styles, how to choose between active and passive, and which connector your head unit or DAB interface box needs.
Aerial styles explained
- Sharkfin roof aerials. Replace the factory roof stub. Best reception, neat looks, ideal for permanent installs.
- Windscreen film aerials. Stick to the inside glass. Quick fit and invisible from outside.
- Glass-mount stick aerials. Mount on rear quarter glass with a discreet wire run.
- Pillar-mount aerials. Bolt to the A pillar or wing for SUVs, vans and motorhomes.
- Amplified add-on aerials. Pair with a passive aerial to boost weak signal areas.
Active vs passive
Active aerials include an in-line amplifier powered by a 5V or 12V phantom feed from the head unit. They deliver stronger signal in fringe areas, hold lock through tunnels and motorway cuttings, and protect against insertion loss caused by long coax runs. Passive aerials are simpler, fit and forget, and ideal for cars in metropolitan areas with plenty of transmitters nearby. If your stereo offers a software setting for aerial power, set it before fitting to avoid blowing the in-line amp on first power-up.
Picking the right connector
- SMB. Common on Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, Alpine and JVC DAB-ready stereos.
- SMA. Used on many interface boxes and aftermarket tuner modules.
- Fakra. OEM-style snap-fit connector seen on factory DAB systems.
- DIN. Older European standard, easy to adapt with passive splitters.
- DAB and FM splitters. Combine both bands onto a single feed and into one car aerial.
Reception tips
DAB performs best when the aerial has line of sight to the sky, so roof-mount sharkfins beat windscreen film in deep cuttings and tunnels. For city driving, stick aerials placed high on the rear screen deliver consistent results. Always route the coax away from ignition coils, alternator looms and dash cam power leads to keep noise off the signal.
If you live or commute in a fringe area such as parts of mid Wales, the Scottish Highlands or rural North Yorkshire, choose an active aerial with a dedicated splitter. Combine it with a quality interface box if your head unit lacks an internal DAB tuner. Stations that drop out at speed are usually a sign of poor ground contact at the aerial base or coax pinched in a door seal.
Brand quality at a glance
- Connects2. Strongest all-rounder for active sharkfins with European fitment.
- Autoleads. Reliable windscreen and glass-mount aerials at sensible prices.
- Pioneer. OEM-grade kits matched to Pioneer DAB stereos.
- Kenwood. Bundled aerial kits for new Kenwood head units.
- Alpine. Premium aerials matched to the Alpine reference range.
Compatibility and fitting
A DAB aerial is one part of a complete install. Plan for these extras:
- Fascia adapter. Holds your new head unit cleanly in the dash.
- ISO harness. Provides clean power and speaker wiring.
- Steering wheel control adapter. Keeps factory stalk and steering controls working.
- Aerial adapter. Converts factory FM connectors to suit your stereo.
- DAB and FM splitter. Lets you keep one external aerial for both bands.
Where to mount
On hatchbacks and saloons the cleanest install is a roof sharkfin in place of the factory stub aerial. On vans and motorhomes a pillar aerial works well due to roof height and material. Keep cable runs short, fit the supplied ground washer correctly, and avoid sandwiching coax with high-current wiring.
