How to choose a DAB car stereo in 2026
Switching to a DAB car stereo in 2026 gives you cleaner sound, more station choice and an end to the FM hiss that returns every time you drive past a transmitter. This guide explains what actually matters when you are picking a new digital head unit, from format and fitment through to aerial choice and aftercare. Use it to shortlist confidently before you order from Bass Junkies.
Single DIN or double DIN: pick the right format
Format comes down to your dash cavity, not personal taste. Single DIN units are the slim, single-slot format you find in pre-2010 cars and most vans. Double DIN units are twice the height and host the larger touchscreens that became standard in passenger cars from 2010 onwards. You cannot squeeze a double DIN into a single DIN cavity, but you can drop a single DIN into a double DIN slot using a pocket adapter. Measure the existing opening before you buy, or send our team a photo and we will confirm.
DAB or DAB+: why it matters in 2026
Every modern unit we stock supports DAB+, the higher-efficiency codec that now carries most UK national and regional stations. Older DAB-only receivers are gradually being phased out as more multiplexes migrate. Buying DAB+ ready today means your stereo will continue receiving the full national line-up without needing replacement in two or three years.
Smartphone mirroring options worth having
Most buyers in 2026 want their phone on screen alongside DAB. The four feature levels we sell, in order of capability:
- Bluetooth audio and calling. Streaming music, podcasts and hands-free calls from any phone. Standard on every unit we list.
- Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Plug your phone in via USB-C or Lightning. Native iOS or Android interface on screen, reliable and inexpensive.
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Same experience without the cable, ideal if you keep your phone in your pocket or bag.
- Built-in voice assistant. Siri or Google Assistant button on the front for navigation, messaging and music without taking your hands off the wheel.
Sound quality features that earn their keep
If you plan to add an amplifier or subwoofer, look for a head unit with low-level RCA pre-outs (front, rear and subwoofer), 24-bit DAC processing and time-alignment. These features let you tune the listening position to the driver seat and feed clean signal to outboard amps. Pre-out voltage of 4V or higher gives you a stronger signal-to-noise ratio and a quieter system overall.
Brand quality at a glance
Every brand below is current 2026 stock, supported by UK warranty:
- Pioneer. Strongest all-rounder for DAB, with sharp screens and reliable Bluetooth pairing.
- Sony. Excellent value double DIN units with crisp audio processing.
- Kenwood. Premium build quality, deep customisation and class-leading time alignment.
- JVC. Affordable single and double DIN units with full DAB+ and CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Alpine. Audiophile-grade head units, high-voltage pre-outs and clean dashboard styling.
Compatibility and fitting
A DAB stereo rarely fits a modern car on its own. You will usually need:
- Fascia adapter. A trim panel that adapts your dash opening to the new stereo and hides factory cutouts.
- ISO harness. A short loom that connects the new stereo to your existing factory plugs without cutting wires.
- Steering-wheel control adapter. Keeps your factory wheel buttons working with the new head unit.
- DAB aerial adapter or active aerial. Provides the higher-gain reception that DAB needs, separate from your standard FM aerial.
Reception, aerials and where most installs go wrong
DAB signal is more dependent on a clean aerial path than FM. A simple stick-on amplified aerial works in most modern cars, but a roof-mounted shark fin or windscreen-printed aerial gives the strongest results. Avoid running the aerial cable parallel to high-current power leads, and make sure the ground point is bare metal rather than painted bodywork. Most poor-reception complaints come down to aerial routing rather than the stereo itself.
Installation: DIY or workshop
A confident DIY fitter can install a DAB head unit in around 90 minutes with a fascia kit, harness and basic hand tools. If your car has CAN bus integration for climate, parking sensors or the factory amp, a workshop install is the safer route to keep all factory features alive. Our Wolverhampton workshop fits stereos daily and can also relocate or replace the aerial in the same visit.
