Run cleaner signal paths with car speaker cable at Bass Junkies. Our oxygen free copper speaker wire is sold by the metre and on full reels, in gauges from slim 18 AWG door runs up to high current 12 AWG sub feeds for full range bass enclosures. Twin core, twisted pair and clear jacketed options match factory plenum routing and resist heat, oil and constant chafing inside door cards, kick panels and the boot, keeping tone and stage intact.

How to choose car speaker cable in 2026
Car speaker cable looks like a simple commodity but the wrong choice quietly costs you sound quality, power and reliability. The right gauge of oxygen free copper, the right insulation and the right routing make a clear audible difference. This 2026 buying guide explains what gauge to use, when to step up and what else to pick up to finish a clean install.
Oxygen free copper vs copper coated aluminium
Cheap speaker wire is often CCA: copper coated aluminium. It looks like copper on the outside but has aluminium running through the core, with around 40 percent higher resistance than true oxygen free copper. The result is voltage drop, lost power at the speaker and corrosion at terminal points. All speaker cable at Bass Junkies in 2026 is genuine OFC, including:
- Twin core OFC. Standard two wire run for door and dashboard speakers, with red and black or red and white sleeves for polarity.
- Twisted pair OFC. For long runs that pass close to power cables, rejecting alternator whine through field cancellation.
- Clear jacketed OFC. Often used in show builds where the conductor count is visible through a translucent jacket.
Picking the right gauge
Speaker cable gauge depends on run length and the power feeding the speaker. A useful 2026 rule of thumb:
- 18 AWG. Suitable for short door speaker runs up to about 50W RMS per channel.
- 16 AWG. Standard upgrade gauge for amplified door and rear speakers up to 100W RMS.
- 14 AWG. Larger runs from boot mounted amps to all four speakers, or short subwoofer runs.
- 12 AWG. High current subwoofer feeds, full range bass enclosures and long boot runs over three metres.
Door speaker upgrades
When you replace your factory door speakers, replacing the speaker wire from the door inwards is often the limiting factor. Factory looms in older platforms can use 22 AWG or 20 AWG wire that is fine for 25W of factory power but chokes a 60W RMS aftermarket coaxial. A short run from the kick panel to the door speaker in 18 AWG OFC removes that bottleneck.
Subwoofer wire considerations
Subwoofer cable is technically still speaker cable but lives a harder life. It carries higher current, is usually longer and is run through the boot where moisture and abrasion are common. For sub feeds:
- Use 12 AWG or larger. Anything thinner robs power from a high RMS sub.
- Match polarity carefully. Out of phase wiring cancels low end and is the most common SPL killer.
- Crimp or solder terminations. Bare twisted ends loosen over time with road vibration.
Routing and protection
Where you run speaker cable matters as much as the cable itself. Best practice in 2026 is to route signal cables on the opposite side of the cabin to power cables, cross power cables at 90 degrees if you must cross them and avoid running speaker wire over engine bay heat sources. Use split loom or expandable braided sleeving in any pass through grommet to protect the jacket from chafing.
Brand quality at a glance
The OFC speaker cable brands stocked at Bass Junkies include:
- Vibe Critical Link. Reliable mid tier OFC at fair pricing, available by the metre.
- Stinger and DB Drag spec cable. Premium installer focused options used in competition builds.
- Connects2 and Autoleads. Strong everyday options sold as door upgrade kits.
Compatibility and fitting
A speaker cable purchase often forms part of a wider install. Pair it with:
- Fascia adapter. For matching a new head unit to the dashboard.
- ISO harness. Plug and play head unit power and speaker connector.
- Steering wheel control adapter. Keeps factory steering wheel buttons live.
- Aerial adapter. Maintains correct radio reception with the new head unit.
