Car aerial antennas in 2026: DAB, FM and shark-fin upgrades
Most car aerial problems come down to a weak signal feed or the wrong type of antenna for the band you actually use. If your DAB cuts out under bridges, your FM reception hisses on long drives or your replacement stereo will not pick up stations at all, the aerial is almost always the cause, not the stereo. A good aerial upgrade is one of the cheapest ways to fix a frustrating install.
Active vs passive aerials
Passive aerials are simple wire whips with no amplification. Active aerials have a small internal amplifier powered by the stereo, which lifts weak signals up to a usable level. Modern DAB head units almost all require an active aerial to work properly, because DAB sits in a higher frequency band that loses strength fast in built-up areas and rural valleys.
Roof, screen and shark-fin styles
- Roof-mount mast aerials. Traditional whip on the rear of the roof, best FM range, simple to fit.
- Glass-mount screen aerials. Adhesive strip on the inside of the rear or front screen, tidy look, ideal for DAB upgrades.
- Shark-fin aerials. Modern OEM-style housing on the roof, often combining DAB and FM in one unit.
- Pillar-mount aerials. Compact replacements for short-stub OEM aerials on hatchbacks.
- Hidden under-bonnet aerials. Concealed option for classic and modified cars with no visible mast.
DAB radio upgrades
Adding a DAB head unit to an older car needs more than just the stereo. The factory FM aerial will not pick up DAB cleanly, so you need a splitter or a dedicated DAB aerial wired to the SMB or SMA connector on the back of the new stereo. Calearo and Connects2 do plug-and-play DAB upgrade kits that fit inside the windscreen pillar trim with no drilling, which is the cleanest solution for a daily driver.
Aerial connectors and adapters
UK cars use a mix of standard, Fakra, ISO and DIN aerial plugs. The wrong adapter blocks the signal entirely or leaves DAB and FM half working. Common combinations:
- Fakra to DIN. Most VAG group, BMW and recent Vauxhall.
- ISO to DIN. Older Ford, Renault, Peugeot, Citroen.
- Single Fakra to SMB. DAB feed from a roof-mount shark-fin into an aftermarket DAB stereo.
- Dual Fakra splitter. Sends FM to the radio and DAB to a separate tuner box.
- DIN to ISO motorola. Universal go-between for older European stereos.
Brand quality at a glance
- Calearo. Italian-engineered, the gold standard for DAB and shark-fin replacements.
- Connects2. Strong UK range of plug-and-play DAB upgrade aerials.
- Autoleads. Reliable adapters and extension leads for older cars.
- Hama. Tidy glass-mount and universal active aerials.
- Hirschmann. Premium OEM-quality replacement masts and bases.
Compatibility and fitting
Pick the aerial first, then check what adapters your specific car needs. Useful add-ons for a clean install:
- Aerial extension cable. 3m or 5m if running from boot-mount or rear screen to dash.
- Phantom power booster. Some active aerials need 12V from the stereo's switched live.
- Right-angle Fakra adapter. Solves tight bends behind compact head units.
- Earth tag and grommet kit. For glass and pillar-mount installs.
Choosing the right aerial
If you mainly listen to DAB, get a dedicated active DAB aerial rather than relying on the original FM whip. If you are restoring a classic, a chrome telescopic mast aerial usually beats a hidden electronic replacement. For everyday daily drivers, a glass-mount active aerial is the cleanest visual choice and the easiest to retrofit.
